thanks Sidney -- that was it.  AFAICS, there was a situation where some tests
could pass before the log file updated on-disk with the spamd logs from that
test's spamd.  eventually, you'd get test N+1 running and reading the "spamd
server started: pid=\d+" from the spamd from test N.  this fix sorts that out.
