Re: Catch me for writing a 'Never Before' BOOK on Tomcat!!!

I agree with all that, however as it stands right now we are looking at
making the book available online. This allows it to change with new
releases. Yes, the book is not going to reflect the new version the day
it comes out (unless we are REALLY on the ball) but it shouldn't be to
long between the release and new version of the book. Also I don't
think we will be covering all the minor releases and certianly not betas
or nightly builds. So that really leaves Tomcat 3.2 right now and in
the future 4.0. Not to daunting of a task I think.

Sam, those things have just been propposed, you should get into the
tcbook@yahoogroups.com list. Ask for it to Chad La Joie <cl...@vt.edu>

What would the scope of the book be? Will it be developing a webapp with jsp
and servlets under tomcat, or will it just be about configuring and setting
up tomcat? In either case, I'd guess given the posts I see day in day out on
this list, these following things are essential:

Tomcat & Apache using mod_jk - covering the ajpv12 & ajpv13 differences, and
why NOT to use JServ
Tomcat with SSL via Apache (perhaps including getting apache to use
mod_ssl?)
Deployment using ANT
Tomcat & IIS

Should of course cover both *nix setups and win32 setups. The first two I
know a fair bit about. I know nothing about the second two.

I would guess the book would have to be targeted at tomcat 4.0 to stand a
chance of being up to date when released.

True, covering nightly builds and milestones is impossible !!

Making the book online solves the problem of delays and being up to date.

So it narrows it down to version 3.2 and 4.0 to cover, and since 4.0 is
beta, covering 3.2 makes more sense.
If I can give a hand, I will, I'm starting to know my way around servlets
and stuff. I've been wanting to participate in a community driven project
for quite some time.

Cheers, AD.
