Currently this requires reticulate as the functionality has been implemented in pyarrow but not in the R package.  

Some folks have mentioned the possibility of making a separate flight client R package, doing its own libarrow build with ARROW_FLIGHT=ON and everything else off -  this might be simpler than adding it to the existing R package.  I don't think anyone is currently looking into this right this second though.
