Which web CMS to use with Alfresco?

I'm creating a web site that will have a blog and other content.  This will be my personal web site and I anticipate adding a family area with a calendar and some document sharing as well.  Roller looks like a good choice for the blog, but it doesn't look like a full web CMS.  What I want sounds like an Alfresco personal version, but that doesn't exist.

Any suggestions for which web CMS (Java based) to use along with Roller for a small but full featured web site?

Thanks.

Yes,

I did mean to say 6.5, not 3.5
We have also decided to use Jahia, and although I run
into some issues, and at least one roadblock I am pretty
satisfied with it's ease of use.

I have tried Magnolia also, but I found that much less
intuitive. I kept like feeling I was modifying a database
directly (a JCR in this case) to change it's behaviors
instead of working with dialogs that ask me the right question.
For example if I want to allow different type of content elements,
I needed to add a specific string to that content container
and it wouldn't verify if that type of content type really existed.
(Excuse for not using the right grammar, I am not familiar what
Magnolia calls each item).

One other issue wast the STK, if you use the open source version
with STK you have to put a link to the Magnolia website from each
and every page. This method of working is not common with
GPL like projects. I don't have issues with adding info in a header
of a website, just that link on every page is to much IMHO.

Dave,

with all the respect for your project,

Creating templates doesn't make a CMS.

Each Roller template is essentially a page, there are some special
types of pages for blog things and you can create any sort of page you
want. You can also code Java plugins and access them from those pages.

See the Roller template guide for more details:

Horatia,

can you name some of the advantages and how that works in Roller?
The last time I played with roller it was just a blog
capable of showing a blog list and a single list. I didn't see any CMS
features,
not even a method to create a page.

Have you ever thougt that it might be handy to use roller as your cms-system, you need very few adjustments and roller as a cms has lot of advantages.

Well, in addition to Ries using the wrong version number for Jahia, I put the wrong Java project name in the Subject line of this thread.  It should be "Which web CMS to use with Roller?", not Alfresco.
Sorry to everyone for that mistake.

Final version should be due in QIII this year, the beta still has some
flaws, though.

Anyhow, we crutinized some CMSs here, also took a look at Hippo &
Magnolia, and we decided for Jahia.

Personally, I don't need the PHP-functionality since we're all Java
here, but it might ease the migration for guys coming from PHP.

Dean,

I have seen your message on the Jahia forum,
I will properly post a quick howto on how to create a new website
somewhere this week.

This weekend I managed to create a new template set, that was very easy.
Then you can select that to create a new site (I hope...)

Have you been able to figure out how to create a new web site with Jahia 6.5 beta?

I've been playing with it and It's very sophisticated looking, but also very unintuitive.  I haven't been able to figure out how to create a simple web site with it.

All of their docs, videos, and webinars assume that you want to modify their demo application.  They don't say anything about how to create a new web site with it.

Thanks.

Re: Which web CMS to use with Alfresco?

Thanks Ries.

Here's what I've found so far.

I tried Alfresco community edition, even though it is too large for what I want.  It has quality issues that would also disqualify it.  The install fails at one point, but completes "successfully".  After starting it I tried to login but it wouldn't recognize its default login.  I restarted it manually using startup.bat so I could see the output and it was throwing exceptions because it couldn't find it's MySql database, which it installed.  I don't want to deal with a CMS that can't even install correctly.

Hippo looks very promising, but the reality is something else.  Their downloads are confusing and incoherent.  The Hippo Suite consists of 4 components:  Repository, CMS, SiteToolkit and JetSpeed Portal.  They say they support linux but I couldn't find a linux download.  I downloaded the Windows installer (130 MB) and it installed a Tomcat 7 service and a directory structure containing Hippo components.  When I go to http://localhost:8080/cms all I see is a blank page.  Hippo's docs are just a series of web pages with ad-hoc instructions.  Hippo is in serious need of some release management and documentation.

I installed dotCMS and it wouldn't start.  All I got was a DOS window with some messages that weren't helpful in diagnosing the problem.  It's also poorly documented.

I'm currently looking at Liferay.  It's blogging capabilities don't look as good as Roller and it's much heavier than I need for a personal / family web site.  But it does work.

I'll take a look at Jahia.
