Is anyone else seeing messages stuck on a queue?

I see this frequently - and I just can't believe that others are not either.

So either, amq is fine and my usage of it is incorrect somehow or there is
something fundementally wrong with it.

There does not seem to be a pattern for when a message is stuck. My simple,
simple app posts messages very infrequently. 1 every few seconds. Most of
the time the messages get through, sometimes one gets stuck. I have a
single client pulling the message off. I can see the message in the queue
browser but it wont come off the queue.

thanks

Has anyone who is experiencing this problem also see in it in the 4.1.0
snapshot ?

Re: Is anyone else seeing messages stuck on a queue?

This is related to the following post:

http://www.nabble.com/Messages-%27stuck%27-on-queue%2C-until-client-restart-tf3017349.html#a8379662

For the version, I went to the following page:
http://www.activemq.org/site/activemq-410-release.html

and pulled: apache-activemq-4.1.0-incubator.zip or
apache-activemq-4.1.0-incubator.tar.gz depending upon my test environment.

Below is my method for creating the consumer - at the moment no producers
are created, i.e. this consumer does not push the message to another queue.
    public void afterPropertiesSet() throws Exception {
    	Assert.hasText(name, "You must set the name property in the spring
config file");
    	Assert.hasText(id, "You must set the consumer ID property in the spring
config file");
        Assert.notNull(messageListener, "You must set the
MessageConsumerListener property in the spring config file");
        Assert.notNull(connectionFactory, "You must set the
connectionFactory in the spring config file");

    	log.info("Attempting to obtain a transacted session from JMS
ConntectionFactory in class: " + this.getClass().getName());
    	Connection conn = connectionFactory.createConnection();
    	if( conn != null ) {
            session = conn.createSession(true, Session.SESSION_TRANSACTED);

            Queue readQueue = session.createQueue(readQueueName);
            messageConsumer = session.createConsumer(readQueue);
            if( writeQueueNames != null ) {
	            for (Iterator iter = writeQueueNames.iterator();
iter.hasNext();) {
	                String writeQueueName = (String) iter.next();
	                Queue writeQueue = session.createQueue(writeQueueName);
	                MessageProducer mp = session.createProducer(writeQueue);
	                mp.setDeliveryMode(DeliveryMode.NON_PERSISTENT);
	                messageProducers.add(mp);
	                queue2MessageProducerMap.put(writeQueueName,mp);
	            }
            }

            if( deadQueueName != null ) {
                Queue deadLetter = session.createQueue(deadQueueName);
                deadMessageQueue = session.createProducer(deadLetter);

deadMessageQueue.setDeliveryMode(DeliveryMode.NON_PERSISTENT);
            }
            initialized = true;
        }

    }

 to read a message I ultimately perform the following:

               message = messageConsumer.receive(5000);

Thanks for any help.

I tried the 4.2 snapshot, and while I did not get any stuck messages, I did
a number of concurrent modification exceptions. Interestingly with the
number of clients I was running I did seem to get through all of the
messages.

Also - 4.2 did not seem to balance the requests very well at all between
clients. I created 2 separate clients on two different machines, both
multi-threaded. It seems like the first client to start was the one that
received nearly all of the messages.

I dont ever remember having these problems with 3.x - so for fun? I rolled
back to 3.2.2 and I ran my test app a number of times a. I never received a
stuck message, nor the concurrent exception and the balancing looked very
even.

Running ./activemq start xbean:activemq.xml

with the svn bin/activemq and tailing /target/activemq.xml seems to now
start although it doesn't seem to start any services. I'll fiddle around
with the config and rerun our unit tests and see if the snapshot fixes
our (suspected) ACKing problems.

Doh, yeah - realised there was a .tar.gz yesterday - we had a script
that was downloading zip files automatically for Windows and I was just
being blind.

I'd got the zip file from the 15th working by running

	bin/activemq start xbean:file:conf/activemq.xml

however our unit tests still failed - we're still trying to make a
concise test case but, essentially, using Net::Stomp under Perl we had
been seeing some messages coming through twice, even after an ACK, or
the broker wedging.

With the snapshot from the 15th we found that if there were multiplke
consumers then our problems seem to go away (with either multiple
producers or a single producer). However if there was only a single
consumer it sat indefinitely waiting a message (again, multiple or a
single producer). Very odd. We're doing traces and trying to work out
what's going on.

With the latest .tar.gz snapshot (from the 17th?) I had to use different
command line arguments

	bin/activemq start

immediately fails with an invalid broker uri exception.

	bin/activemq xbean:activemq.xml
	bin/activemq xbean:file:conf/activemq.xml

both work (you probably know this buit incase anybody else is
wondering). However we still see the same problems.

I can send you our test scripts if it'll help.

Simon

The .zip file currently only has the .bat files. The tar.gz has the
shell scripts. I've just patched the code so that the next nightly
snapshot of the zip will have the unix scripts too (I often use zips
on OS X for example :)

I tried the tar.gz distro and it worked perfectly for me on OS X.
Maybe try try tar.gz too or today's snapshot to see if it works for
you now?

The Snapshots don't seem to have *nix shell scripts in the bin/
directory.

Using an old copy fo the activemq script gets to the point of

	Loading message broker from: xbean:activemq.xml

and then just hangs. strace doesn't reveal anything.

(This is after creating a writeable /target/test.log by hand)

Downloading

https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/activemq/trunk/assembly/src/release/bin/activemq

gets an error message

ERROR: java.lang.RuntimeException: Failed to execute start task. Reason:

I wonder if either of you could try out trunk to see if the problem is
still there? There's been a number of patches in the acknowledgement
code of late. (Unfortunatley the nightly snapshots haven't been
working for a little while but we'll hopefully get them working again
ASAP).

A tutorial on how to build from the source code is here...

Hi,

I've noticed the same behavior. Every now and then a message will be
visible through the JMX interface but not accessible to consumers. I'm
using ActiveMQ 4.1.0 for both the broker and clients. We have a single
producer and about 1000 consumers. The consumers use queuePrefetch=1 and
AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE sessions.

Hope this helps,

- Tony

Which version are you using? Also what kind of consumer is it
(transactional / sync/async etc)

I should have mentioned that my 2 brokers have different vm transport URIs.

I should have mentioned, also, the two brokers have different journaledJDBC
dataDirectories. I assume, therefore, that they have different Derby
databases URIs, but I am not absolutely sure on that point.

Re: Is anyone else seeing messages stuck on a queue?

Posted by "Dan.Connelly" <Da...@state.vt.us>.
I am seeing stuck message using AMQ 4.1 with JBoss embedded brokers, SLSB
producers, MDB consumers, vm transport and derby persistence. (Also with
an external JMS consumer.) I have 2 embedded brokers and 3 queues (1+2) so
far.

This seems to be a start-up issues. If I re-start JBoss, the queue(s) gets
unstuck and seem to run fine after that. (But I have not tested with a
heavy load.)

When I shutdown JBoss from the JMX Console I (always) get the following
error, which may or may not be related. Perhaps my EJBs need to be
clossing JMS connections?? Perhaps ActiveMQ is neglecting to close
them????

[ActiveMQManagedConnection] Error occured during close of a JMS connection.
