Cayenne Publicity
Hi All,
Now that the new Apache Cayenne site is up, which looks very nice I
think it would be good to grab some publicity. Possibly with the next
2.0.x point release.
Another strategy would be to publish an article on the IBM Developer
Works site or on the Oreilly site. With regard to TSS site, I think a
press release is all that is warranted.

Just so that we at least have start, I've created
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apache_Cayenne
and added the logo to the page. I also linked it in from a couple of
other pages which talk about Apache projects and ORM mapping. Andrus,
perhaps you'd like to flesh out a little of the history of the
project. Actually, I'm quite curious: what were the original
motivations for starting the project?

Also there's nothing on Wikipedia about Apache Cayenne:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cayenne
Would be nice for somebody to chime in and write a small article.

I'm not sure I'll have the time to do any writing, but I'd certainly be
willing to be a proofreader/editor/extra set of eyes.

I will volunteer for the Developer Works article, if someone will do
the graduation story.

Same thing here, we can submit a short Apache TLP graduation story.
Anybody wants to do that?

Ok - I'll step in to cover the TSS submission. These are all good
ideas. I'll try to find some time over the weekend to write up
something.

Yes I think so, this is a big deal Apache lends a lot of credability
to the Cayenne framework. It means a lot to architects justifying the
technology choices.
I would also put in a link to the Apache Conn podcast by Jean, as its
interesting to hear her talk about the process. Also people will see
that Cayenne is a pretty solid piece of work which has been around the
block already.

Agreed, no question about that. I was commenting on whether we should
still submit a standalone news item to TSS about TLP.

I think Cayenne becoming a TLP is a good news piece, especially when
you discuss the JPA roadmap. Gives people a feeling of a future
proofed architecture.

Yeah, the TLP news are a bit dated... Still one place where this can
pose as news - the Apache front page:
http://www.apache.org/
Didn't have time to check the site sources and build a patch with
Cayenne announcement. Another area where volunteer help would be great.
Now the JPA related press release. A good idea, but a bit too early.
Essentially until there is something fairly solid to give people to
play with (even non-compliant, but having all major pieces in place),
we don't want to announce it. I still can't put my hands on the TCK
to at least estimate where we are (a bit of a deja vu - last summer
all our TCK requests went into some internet black hole). So I
suggest to hold off on that.

This has been up for a little while: http://www.apachenews.org/
archives/000943.html
As for a press release, perhaps we need something more exciting than
a bug fix release to hook it on. How about:
* Cayenne is giving Hibernate et al a run for their money and has
started the JPA compliance testing process. Andrus, lead developer,
remarked "We are have an extremely robust framework and JPA is our
immediate target. We are looking forward to passing Sun compliance
and are starting the official test process shortly."
* Cayenne has become a top level Apache project. Slightly old news,
but still interesting. http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CAY/
