Exactly as it's written in the exception - it's hardly to say where the
problem lies - with the plan or not having them at all. I assume you
haven't yet created a plan for the webapp as described in
http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/Deployment#head-e90b4f36d14c256e8a85a068971dfb9d4bd9ca8e,
have you?

Not necessarily. The error is always printed out whenever any deployment
errors show up, be it a running server or any plan errors or anything.

When i see this error it's usually because I'm running the deployer on
a machine that's got an instance of Geronimo already running. The
"distribute" command is designed to run offline so it gets confused if
Geronimo is running on the same box.

Try it with no Geronimo instance running.

Jacek,

When i use "list-modules" to see the modules deployed my
application is not listed. So i ran the command "java -jar

Well, it seems Wiki is not clear on it. The info is there, but not
easily found. Possibly Aaron's book would help better, but...

When you run java -jar bin/deployer.jar you will get the list of
available options and commands. One of the command - deploy - you've
already used. Another one is list-modules. Try

  java -jar bin/deployer.jar list-modules

and you'll see the list of configurations. @see
http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/Running for more information about
availabnle configurations.

One of the listed configurations should be your just deployed webapp.
The name depends on the configId you declared in the plan.

So, once successfully deployed, try

  java -jar bin/server.jar <your_webapp_configuration>

, open up the browser of your choice and point it to
http://localhost:8080/<your_webapp_context>, where <your_webapp_context>
is the one you defined in geronimo-web.xml file (or geronimo-jetty.xml).

That's it.

console output is this expected.

Hi Jacek,

I am trying to deploy a web application. When i type the command
"java -jar bin/deployer.jar deploy C:\SampleWebApp\hello1.war" it is
asking username and password. What is the username and password should
i give to deploy this application sucessfully.

I will do task #! first because it was long since i build

time. I will do that that let you know. Once i am done with that i
will do a sample web app and try to deploy that.

I'll be describing what I could work out with the PetStore deployment
along with the questions/troubles/worries/tasks I'll face/predict in
http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/PetStore.

Task #1: Build Geronimo (provided you haven't done it yet it will give
me some time to finish the above ;))

alternatively

Task #2: Create and deploy a simple webapp - with a single JSP that
accesses Derby DB. I'm done with it, but will have to describe the steps
on Geronimo Wiki - if you could do that I'd be so glad.

Ask questions as you go along.

You need to download them from the IBM site.

Derby is currently voting on whether to release 10.1.1.0 which will
include client-side jars that we can redisribute. I have tested this
candidate with Geronimo and things seem to be working fine. When Derby's
vote completes (probably Friday if things go well) expect Geronimo to
update to 10.1.1.0 soon after.

One way to see why it's happened is to take a look at the sources.
Sometimes, it's not very easy to spot why a particular exception shows
up until one has taken a look at the code and figured out by yourself.

This time I'm pretty sure I know the answer without looking at the code
, hopefully. You've defined the parentId in the webapp plan to
'org/apache/geronimo', which is not available, not by default. Either
remove the parentId setting, which is not mandatory or change it so that
it points to one of the valid configuration already available in
Geronimo. @see

Nice you have asked. There is some discussion about how to simplify the
very first start for people who are new to the project. Although it's
not that hard to start and deploy modules, people seem to be very
confused and frustrated with the lack of step-by-step procedure about
what to do at first. It's scattered in the Wiki.

So, your first assignment is to write down the steps to deploy the demo
application, which you can find in applications\demo in the repo
starting with Geronimo build, deployment and finally running.

I'm pretty sure that once you've done it you'll know what to tackle next ;)

It's done. You've been assigned.

Please take a look at Geronimo JIRA
(http://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/BrowseProject.jspa?id=10220) and
start hacking. Also, I'd be glad if you could help me with the PetStore
porting - http://wiki.apache.org/geronimo/PetStore. Would you?
