The POM generated by the archetypes should have an xml prolog/header specifying encoding. For anyone using non-ascii chars this is important as it will ensure that chars are handled correctly.
I've attached a patch for this. Changes are relative the top level archetypes project trunk.

There is no fix for the "Simple Project Archetype" (maven-archetype-simple), as I couldn't find a pom (nor understand its structure). Please remove it from the listed components for this jira!

The XML spec defines UTF-8 if the header is missing.
