HEAD

Dear All,

where can I get the latest (the HEAD) or a stable development version of
bcel? So far I've only been able to locate version 5.1.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Cheers
Thorsten

Hi,

I was not able to find this statement. My code is pretty stable now, but I seems
inevitable not migrating to ASM.

I agree and it is highly appreciated what is being done.
Actually, we are working on a worst-case-execution-time module using
BCEL. Is is useful for real-time systems. Perhaps it can be discussed if
these classes fits into BCEL somewhere? It is not GPL code at the
moment, but it could probably be if one of the committers e-mails me
offline and take a discussion on the topic.
Best,
Rasmus

FYI, ASM has an optional layer which implements DOM-style access on top
of its core SAX-style library.

Not much to add but this...

In some cases using ASM is not as straight forward to program as BCEL.
(I always compare it with DOM vs SAX) ...but ASM has a much more vital
community and that would be *my* reason to go with ASM if possible. Plus
the cool eclipse plugin :-)

But if there enough people willing to add support for 1.5 and later there is no
reason not to do it.

The situation is basically that BCEL was one of the original designs for
this sort of thing. It did a good job in its day, but the ASM framework
is a more modern design, and it shows.

Dave and a few others have done a great job fixing the most important
BCEL issues and preparing for a new release, in order to support tools
that currently use BCEL.

However adding 1.5 support to BCEL's existing design is going to be
quite a big job. I'm not sure whether it's worth doing, or whether it's
even possible (Dave and others may have a better idea about that than
me).

As ASM uses a BSD license, has an excellent design, has an active
development pool, and already supports java 1.5 it would be *my* choice
for a new project.

Cheers,

Simon

That is the one. Perhaps i mistated, there certainly was talk of putting
that on the web site, but perhaps it never was.

BCEL will continue to be supported; myself, Torsten, and a few others fix
bugs, etc, and will probably move forward with 1.5 support after the 5.2
release is done. Like all open source projects, whether or not BCEL dies
out, depends on whether folks show up to work on it. I intend to do what i
can so that doesn't happen, and perhaps others will as well, but as has been
said before, 'the proof is in the puddin'. We shall see.

Hi Dave,

Where is the BCEL website? I only know about http://jakarta.apache.org/bcel/
But you say that:

"The advice on the bcel website is that new projects should use asm"

That is pretty serious stuff for some of us who are using BCEL. Does
that mean that BCEL is dying out?

Some work has been done regarding parsing of annotations, however it was
decided that this change shouldn't go in a point release, but instead wait
for a bcel 6.0 release. The advice on the bcel website is that new projects
should use asm. For existing projects, depending on how difficult it is to
switch over your code to asm, decides, i guess, whether it is worth it for
you. Generally speaking you will get better support and more timely
releases there.

Hi,

Do you have a roadmap for JDK 5 features? Say, this year, next year, 2 years or
any date, but we definitily need an approximate date to decide if we stay with
BCEL or move to a competitor like ASM.

Thanks,

Erik Bengtson

I have the same problem. It seems like the Apache website for BCEL is
dead? But does anyone of the committers have a status of the roadmap and
plans for BCEL?
Best,
Rasmus
