WSS4J standalone

Can WSS4J be used in a standalone mode. That is will
the WSS4j classes work correctly without bing
incorporated in an Axis handler. I need to sign xml
documents that will not be using Tomcat and will
required the inclusion of a BST.
Help on this is appreciated.
