+ <content type="html"><p>The latest update (3) to Apple's Java causes problems with the Mac OS X version of OOo 3.x. A patch to be included in newer versions of the OOo app fixes things but in the meanwhile, you can download and install the libraries. + <title type="html">A month of LibreOffice</title>

+ <content type="html"><p>Well it&#8217;s been an exciting month, and there&#8217;s more to come. Not only this blog has known a record high peaks of audience, but I really wanted to show what we are up to these days. Several things are happening and I wish, now that I and my fellow non-Oracle members have resigned from the Community Council of OpenOffice.org, to stop the antics around that question. The fact of the matter is, we have left the OpenOffice.org project, others are leaving as well, and I don&#8217;t foresee a lot of people staying after the 3.3 release, which will be the last OpenOffice.org released with the full help of the community. On the other hand, Oracle will not be working with us, and is not interested <a href="http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/177158">to do so in their own words</a>. Enough said. </p>
+<p>The Document Foundation and LibreOffice are quite a daunting task to achieve; in fact, it&#8217;s not just the continuation of the largest code base of Free and Open Source software, which is already something major in itself, it&#8217;s the live development of software that&#8217;s truly innovative, truly appealing, and exceeding what the users were used to expect before. I have read on GigaOM that LibreOffice was, like OpenOffice.org, a technology of the past, a paradigm of the eighties or the nineties waiting to die. I would not disagree with the notion that our paradigm is old: that&#8217;s what Microsoft is realizing, and why it&#8217;s freaking out by creating phony videos on YouTube that only helps to highlight the lock-in people experience with Microsoft formats. Yet, LibreOffice is here to stay; as a project, and as a software. After our two betas we are expecting a code freeze by tomorrow or so, and we already have included lots of patc
hes and fixes that will make LibreOffice already different from what you would have expected: a themed OpenOffice.org . More changes will be visible soon. </p>
+<p>On the community point of view, it&#8217;s important to note that despite being only one month old we gained over 60 developers, around 40 of them being localizers, the other twenty submitting actual code patches. I understand the developers are having fun, that they&#8217;re fixing a lot of broken things, and if you have downloaded our latest beta the first thing you will realize aside our splashscreen is how blazingly fast LibreOffice starts, both on cold boot and on subsequent starts. We will have to see how this trend in attracting more developers evolves over time. Also on the community point of view we have started to discuss several fundamental questions such as the definition of contributors, our position on copyright assignment while rolling out tools, mailing lists and committing ourselves to transparency: now you don&#8217;t just have the minutes of our Steering Committee&#8217;s meetings, you can join in public sessions, ask questions on
the phone and have the actual recording of the session on line. </p>
+<p>But there&#8217;s a lot more that needs to be taken care of: our bylaws, the governance of our project and of course the foundation itself.<br />
+I strongly believe that in the end, it&#8217;s how we will shape the very fabric of our community -which today mostly amounts to the OpenOffice.org project volunteers- that will allow us to progress and innovate together. After a month, I am cautiously optimistic, but it seems we&#8217;re on the right track to do something extraordinary. Thank you everyone, looking forward to a great Document Foundation! </p>

I met at Oscon last summer a representative of the government (a US citizen, actually, working in Qatar) who found the possibilities of OpenOffice.org quite interesting.... And I've been since trying to follow up.</div><div><br /></div><div>Oman is also driving to use Foss and OpenOffice.org. + <title type="html">Leaving the OpenOffice.org project</title>

+ <content type="html"><p>Today is a special day. I feel both sad and relieved, happy and somewhat disgusted. I have officially resigned from all my duties, roles and positions inside the OpenOffice.org project. My resignation is effective immediately and I am leaving the project. I will now be contributing to the <a href="http://www.documentfoundation.org">Document Foundation</a>, while of course continuing to work at <a href="http://www.arsaperta.com">Ars Aperta</a> and at the <a href="http://www.oasis-open.org">OASIS</a> as a member of its Board of Director, eGov Steering Committee and ODF Committees.</p>
+<p>These past days have been tense. In a sense it was to be expected, but on the other hand I feel that it was in fact quite surprising and unprofessional. The Oracle employees who are members of the OpenOffice.org project and who expressed themselves these past days have displayed a disturbing lack of understanding of Free and Open Source Software; LibreOffice is, after all, and until proven otherwise, a downstream version of OpenOffice.org, and as such deserves inclusion into the OpenOffice.org community. I can only imagine what it would be like if Debian was rejecting the Ubuntu employees among its teams, calling it a fork. As for the fork itself, and because we&#8217;re still a downstream version of OpenOffice.org, forks become forks only when one of the boys refuse to play ball with the others; and the Oracle team of OpenOffice.org just did that. As such, and you might call this disingenuous, they created the fork and bear the final responsibility for
it; of course the community at large created the Document Foundation and LibreOffice, but the astounding lack of dialogue, the immediate labeling as competitors from the very second the Foundation was announced created the fundamental rift that turned a potential, vague state of things into a hard reality.</p>
+<p>Now, this is not going to be an Oracle bashing blog: I would like to thank the engineers of Hamburg, the former Sunnies and StarDivision employees for the opportunity and honour they gave hundreds of people like me to work on their side and contribute to a quite unique project. They&#8217;re good people. But History plays against them. In any case, they are for ever welcome inside the Document Foundation. Fair winds, <em>Genossen</em>.</p>
+<p>This post would not be complete without my final message to the Native-Language Confederation of OpenOffice.org, the bulk of the worldwide communities forming the heart of the OpenOffice.org communities: this is my message of resignation that I&#8217;m reposting here:</p>

+ <title type="html">Having One's Cake....</title>

+ <content type="html"><p>October 13 saw our birthday. Ten years is a long time and even longer when you think about it. Each day&mdash;pff. A long moment of waking, eating, exercising, loving, talking, eating, sleeping, and then again. Pause and the weekend passes with all you haven't done and look forward to the new week to come. Repeat? Hardly, each week, month, quarter differs, marked by forgotten memories recalled at odd moments, marked by the wonderful persistence of others, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, met at conferences and domestic places.</p><p>And code: evolutionary, progressing, slowly catching up with the notions of the future born of too much science fiction&mdash;but getting there, now, ten years in.</p><p>In my birthday message I couldn't describe what a profound personal and cultural and even political change we, the OOo community, have really made. Prior to our intervention on this global stage there was no cry f
or open standards in edocuments that had gotten any traction; there was only the acceptance of "just like a standard" because it was universally (!!) used. There was, in short, massive misunderstanding and the acceptance that the opaque status quo, where you can only accept the commodity because there is no choice.&nbsp;</p><p>There was no or little sense that the decisions to adopt, which is to say, buy, this or that software for desktops (numbering in the tens of millions) was anything like a political decision, and thus subject to public scrutiny and standards of accountability. Now there is. I first raised this logic sometime in 2003, 2004, at conferences, where I urged people to understand that their tax dollars were at stake when software was bought for government use, and that there were quite reasonable alternatives, both to the application and to the format.</p><p>It was a kind of "political" argument but of such a nat
ure as irreducible to any political agenda, unless one should foolishly argue that patronage, corruption, and opacity constitute a kind of political stance. They don't. They constitute a phase in civilization that we strive to emerge from, however imperfectly, however much we slide back.&nbsp;</p><p>But OOo gives us the tools to step more boldly into the light. It's not a matter of insisting that one use X over Y. It's a matter of insisting that the purchasing actions be accountable, that they be defensible according to the terms we accept.</p><p>Those terms include:&nbsp;</p><ul><li>Wise use of public money:&nbsp;</li><li><span> </span>Spend tax revenue (and associated interest income) on tools that do the job not on brands that cost more and do more than is needed.&nbsp;</li><li><span> </span>Ensure that there is room for growth, both with the application and with the
format used. This is another way of saying,&nbsp;</li><li>NO VENDOR LOCK IN</li><li><span> </span>Comment: Vendor lockin means that it's really hard, if not financially and technologically impossible, to move away from a vendor's system, as millions of documents, and the applications required to work with them, cannot be easily transferred or ported over to another system. It's a catastrophe, and it has configured much of our software universe. But not only that. We see it with the internal combustion engine, we see it with structures of power distribution, we see it in many places: what we did long ago has consequences today&mdash;global warming comes to mind&mdash;and changing things to a more desired way is immensely, immensely difficult. But not impossible. We, modern civilization, got rid of the utterly needless lead in gasoline. We got rid of asbestos in many places. And so on. When the <em>need</em>&nbsp;
is clear, the concerted effort is possible, the result achievable. I see this now with software. There has seldom been a time in human culture when the informational drama has been so stark.</li><li>That's because there has never been a time when there were so many children needing schooling, when there were so many adults needing re-training (because their traditional ways of life have been demolished by, say, climate change), when so many are moving to cities and thus away from rural areas, and in cities, they need not just to know how to read and write but how to do that on a computer.</li><li>And they need to be able to exchange their ideas, their readings, writings; and do the other things that demand knowledge of and access to software enabling these communications.</li><li>And that software has to be free software, or at least based on it. Else, what are we asking of the world? That they pay a private tax to do what has, since the m
odern period (post Renaissance) a nearly free activity? (Paper costs money, as do pencils; but very little, and one can always find a means of writing for free. It is in a nation's interest to have a literate population: they earn more money, make for a commercial urban world, and enrich the overall nation.)</li><li>Free software enabling the capture of thoughts and their communication is requisite for a future that is a future and not a dreary dive into the past. It is needed so that children can be taught, so that adults can communicate without cost and fear, so that new things designed to address the dramatic spectacles of our present and future lives can come into being.</li><li>And OpenOffice.org is the key to that. Whether as we see it now, as an integrated application, or as a set of useful tools drawn from the "Cloud" is beside the point. It's the free technology unbounded by platform, license, imagination that is key, and that uses
an open standard, the ODF, that frees you to choose what works for <em>you</em>&mdash;not for the vendor.&nbsp;</li></ul><p>So, happy birthday, OpenOffice.org, and thanks to all for the support, contributions and community. We really have changed the world, we really are changing it. This first decade&mdash;Well, it was our childhood. We are reaching now, in the second decade, the next phase, and it's a phase we all look forward to. I'm proud to be a part of OpenOffice.org, to be part of the global community and to have had a small part in changing the world for the better. How many can say the same? But isn't that the point? +<p>From <a href="http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/business-of-it/2010/10/05/oracle-shows-lacklustre-support-for-libreoffice-40090410/">their official reaction</a>, it looks as though Oracle haven&#8217;t yet decided how to respond to their <a href="http://www.mealldubh.org/index.php/2010/09/28/942/">adult child leaving home</a> unilaterally. It&#8217;s a bit naive to expect them to be wildly enthusiastic. However, having an active community is what makes OpenOffice.org special, and Oracle are wise enough to realise that.</p>
+<p><a href="http://www.documentfoundation.org/lists/announce/msg00006.html">Early indications</a> are that the group of OpenOffice.org volunteers who set up <a href="http://www.documentfoundation.org/">The Document Foundation</a> have read the mood of the community correctly, and that the activist community will follow them into the new Foundation. If so, the old Oracle owned mailing lists, support forums, etc. will simply wither and die, and all the buzz will be around LibreOffice.</p>
+<p>The beauty of open source is that success or failure is visible to the world. In a month or two, everyone will be able to see the pace of development of LibreOffice versus Oracle&#8217;s continuing OpenOffice.org, and decide which is the better bet for the future.</p>
+<p>The Document Foundation has got off to a roaring start, but they have to prove themselves in the long haul. If I was an Oracle executive, I&#8217;d be playing wait and see too.</p></content>

+announcement of The Document Foundation, and we would like to share some<br />
+numbers with the people who have decided to follow us since the first<br />
+day.</p>
+<p>The beta of LibreOffice has been downloaded over 80.000 times. The<br />
+infrastructure has expanded dramatically from 25 to 45 working mirrors<br />
+in 25 countries (in every continent), including islands in the Pacific<br />
+Ocean. This number is close to half the mirrors achieved by<br />
+OpenOffice.org during ten years of history of the project.</p>
+<p>People have started to contribute to the code, suggesting features,<br />
+committing patches and filing bugs. In just one week, around 80 code<br />
+contributions (patches, and direct commits) have been accepted in<br />
+LibreOffice from a total of 27 volunteers, several of them newly-won,<br />
+with around 100 developers hanging out on the #libreoffice irc channel<br />
+which is buzzing with activity (around 14,000 messages sent).</p>
+<p>Turning to the wider community, 2.000 people have subscribed to the list<br />
+announce@ to keep up with the latest TDF news, and 300 people to the<br />
+discussion list discuss@, where there has been an average of 100<br />
+messages per day.</p>
+<p>To round up the numbers, there are nearly 600 people following TDF<br />
+tweets, over 150 following the identi.ca TDF account, and over 1.000<br />
+fans on Facebook. The traffic on the server has been in the region of<br />
+500 GB.</p>
+<p>In its only official response to the creation of the Foundation, Oracle<br />
+has stated: âOracle is investing substantial resources in<br />
+OpenOffice.org. With more than one hundred million users, we believe<br />
+OpenOffice.org is the most advanced, most feature rich open source<br />
+implementation and will strongly encourage the Open Office community to<br />
+continue to contribute through www.openoffice.org.â</p>
+<p>The Foundation understands from this that Oracle has no immediate plans<br />
+to support the Foundation, or to transfer community assets such as the<br />

+<p>The latest update (3) to Apple's Java causes problems with the Mac OS X version of OOo 3.x. A patch to be included in newer versions of the OOo app fixes things but in the meanwhile, you can download and install the libraries. +<p>Well it’s been an exciting month, and there’s more to come. Not only this blog has known a record high peaks of audience, but I really wanted to show what we are up to these days. Several things are happening and I wish, now that I and my fellow non-Oracle members have resigned from the Community Council of OpenOffice.org, to stop the antics around that question. The fact of the matter is, we have left the OpenOffice.org project, others are leaving as well, and I don’t foresee a lot of people staying after the 3.3 release, which will be the last OpenOffice.org released with the full help of the community. On the other hand, Oracle will not be working with us, and is not interested <a href="http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/177158">to do so in their own words</a>. Enough said. </p>
+<p>The Document Foundation and LibreOffice are quite a daunting task to achieve; in fact, it’s not just the continuation of the largest code base of Free and Open Source software, which is already something major in itself, it’s the live development of software that’s truly innovative, truly appealing, and exceeding what the users were used to expect before. I have read on GigaOM that LibreOffice was, like OpenOffice.org, a technology of the past, a paradigm of the eighties or the nineties waiting to die. I would not disagree with the notion that our paradigm is old: that’s what Microsoft is realizing, and why it’s freaking out by creating phony videos on YouTube that only helps to highlight the lock-in people experience with Microsoft formats. Yet, LibreOffice is here to stay; as a project, and as a software. After our two betas we are expecting a code freeze by tomorrow or so, and we already have included lots of patches and fixes that will ma
ke LibreOffice already different from what you would have expected: a themed OpenOffice.org . More changes will be visible soon. </p>
+<p>On the community point of view, it’s important to note that despite being only one month old we gained over 60 developers, around 40 of them being localizers, the other twenty submitting actual code patches. I understand the developers are having fun, that they’re fixing a lot of broken things, and if you have downloaded our latest beta the first thing you will realize aside our splashscreen is how blazingly fast LibreOffice starts, both on cold boot and on subsequent starts. We will have to see how this trend in attracting more developers evolves over time. Also on the community point of view we have started to discuss several fundamental questions such as the definition of contributors, our position on copyright assignment while rolling out tools, mailing lists and committing ourselves to transparency: now you don’t just have the minutes of our Steering Committee’s meetings, you can join in public sessions, ask questions on the phone and have th
e actual recording of the session on line. </p>
+<p>But there’s a lot more that needs to be taken care of: our bylaws, the governance of our project and of course the foundation itself.<br />
+I strongly believe that in the end, it’s how we will shape the very fabric of our community -which today mostly amounts to the OpenOffice.org project volunteers- that will allow us to progress and innovate together. After a month, I am cautiously optimistic, but it seems we’re on the right track to do something extraordinary. Thank you everyone, looking forward to a great Document Foundation! </p>

+<div>Qatar is of real interest to me, as its investment in modern technology and in particular in Foss, is exciting and enormously promising. I met at Oscon last summer a representative of the government (a US citizen, actually, working in Qatar) who found the possibilities of OpenOffice.org quite interesting.... And I've been since trying to follow up.</div><div><br /></div><div>Oman is also driving to use Foss and OpenOffice.org. +<p>Today is a special day. I feel both sad and relieved, happy and somewhat disgusted. I have officially resigned from all my duties, roles and positions inside the OpenOffice.org project. My resignation is effective immediately and I am leaving the project. I will now be contributing to the <a href="http://www.documentfoundation.org">Document Foundation</a>, while of course continuing to work at <a href="http://www.arsaperta.com">Ars Aperta</a> and at the <a href="http://www.oasis-open.org">OASIS</a> as a member of its Board of Director, eGov Steering Committee and ODF Committees.</p>
+<p>These past days have been tense. In a sense it was to be expected, but on the other hand I feel that it was in fact quite surprising and unprofessional. The Oracle employees who are members of the OpenOffice.org project and who expressed themselves these past days have displayed a disturbing lack of understanding of Free and Open Source Software; LibreOffice is, after all, and until proven otherwise, a downstream version of OpenOffice.org, and as such deserves inclusion into the OpenOffice.org community. I can only imagine what it would be like if Debian was rejecting the Ubuntu employees among its teams, calling it a fork. As for the fork itself, and because we’re still a downstream version of OpenOffice.org, forks become forks only when one of the boys refuse to play ball with the others; and the Oracle team of OpenOffice.org just did that. As such, and you might call this disingenuous, they created the fork and bear the final responsibility for it; of cou
rse the community at large created the Document Foundation and LibreOffice, but the astounding lack of dialogue, the immediate labeling as competitors from the very second the Foundation was announced created the fundamental rift that turned a potential, vague state of things into a hard reality.</p>
+<p>Now, this is not going to be an Oracle bashing blog: I would like to thank the engineers of Hamburg, the former Sunnies and StarDivision employees for the opportunity and honour they gave hundreds of people like me to work on their side and contribute to a quite unique project. They’re good people. But History plays against them. In any case, they are for ever welcome inside the Document Foundation. Fair winds, <em>Genossen</em>.</p>
+<p>This post would not be complete without my final message to the Native-Language Confederation of OpenOffice.org, the bulk of the worldwide communities forming the heart of the OpenOffice.org communities: this is my message of resignation that I’m reposting here:</p>

+<p>October 13 saw our birthday. Ten years is a long time and even longer when you think about it. Each day—pff. A long moment of waking, eating, exercising, loving, talking, eating, sleeping, and then again. Pause and the weekend passes with all you haven't done and look forward to the new week to come. Repeat? Hardly, each week, month, quarter differs, marked by forgotten memories recalled at odd moments, marked by the wonderful persistence of others, friends, colleagues, acquaintances, met at conferences and domestic places.</p><p>And code: evolutionary, progressing, slowly catching up with the notions of the future born of too much science fiction—but getting there, now, ten years in.</p><p>In my birthday message I couldn't describe what a profound personal and cultural and even political change we, the OOo community, have really made. Prior to our intervention on this global stage there was no cry for open standards in edocuments that had gotten any traction;
there was only the acceptance of "just like a standard" because it was universally (!!) used. There was, in short, massive misunderstanding and the acceptance that the opaque status quo, where you can only accept the commodity because there is no choice. </p><p>There was no or little sense that the decisions to adopt, which is to say, buy, this or that software for desktops (numbering in the tens of millions) was anything like a political decision, and thus subject to public scrutiny and standards of accountability. Now there is. I first raised this logic sometime in 2003, 2004, at conferences, where I urged people to understand that their tax dollars were at stake when software was bought for government use, and that there were quite reasonable alternatives, both to the application and to the format.</p><p>It was a kind of "political" argument but of such a nature as irreducible to any political agenda, unless one should foolishly argue that patronage, corruption, and
opacity constitute a kind of political stance. They don't. They constitute a phase in civilization that we strive to emerge from, however imperfectly, however much we slide back. </p><p>But OOo gives us the tools to step more boldly into the light. It's not a matter of insisting that one use X over Y. It's a matter of insisting that the purchasing actions be accountable, that they be defensible according to the terms we accept.</p><p>Those terms include: </p><ul><li>Wise use of public money: </li><li><span> </span>Spend tax revenue (and associated interest income) on tools that do the job not on brands that cost more and do more than is needed. </li><li><span> </span>Ensure that there is room for growth, both with the application and with the format used. This is another way of saying, </li><li>NO VENDOR LOCK IN</li><li><span> </span>Comment: Vendor lockin means that it's really hard, if not financially and technologically impossible, to move away f
rom a vendor's system, as millions of documents, and the applications required to work with them, cannot be easily transferred or ported over to another system. It's a catastrophe, and it has configured much of our software universe. But not only that. We see it with the internal combustion engine, we see it with structures of power distribution, we see it in many places: what we did long ago has consequences today—global warming comes to mind—and changing things to a more desired way is immensely, immensely difficult. But not impossible. We, modern civilization, got rid of the utterly needless lead in gasoline. We got rid of asbestos in many places. And so on. When the <em>need</em> is clear, the concerted effort is possible, the result achievable. I see this now with software. There has seldom been a time in human culture when the informational drama has been so stark.</li><li>That's because there has never been a time when there were so many children need
ing schooling, when there were so many adults needing re-training (because their traditional ways of life have been demolished by, say, climate change), when so many are moving to cities and thus away from rural areas, and in cities, they need not just to know how to read and write but how to do that on a computer.</li><li>And they need to be able to exchange their ideas, their readings, writings; and do the other things that demand knowledge of and access to software enabling these communications.</li><li>And that software has to be free software, or at least based on it. Else, what are we asking of the world? That they pay a private tax to do what has, since the modern period (post Renaissance) a nearly free activity? (Paper costs money, as do pencils; but very little, and one can always find a means of writing for free. It is in a nation's interest to have a literate population: they earn more money, make for a commercial urban world, and enrich the overall nation.)</li><
li>Free software enabling the capture of thoughts and their communication is requisite for a future that is a future and not a dreary dive into the past. It is needed so that children can be taught, so that adults can communicate without cost and fear, so that new things designed to address the dramatic spectacles of our present and future lives can come into being.</li><li>And OpenOffice.org is the key to that. Whether as we see it now, as an integrated application, or as a set of useful tools drawn from the "Cloud" is beside the point. It's the free technology unbounded by platform, license, imagination that is key, and that uses an open standard, the ODF, that frees you to choose what works for <em>you</em>—not for the vendor. </li></ul><p>So, happy birthday, OpenOffice.org, and thanks to all for the support, contributions and community. We really have changed the world, we really are changing it. This first decade—Well, it was our childhood. We are reach
ing now, in the second decade, the next phase, and it's a phase we all look forward to. I'm proud to be a part of OpenOffice.org, to be part of the global community and to have had a small part in changing the world for the better. How many can say the same? But isn't that the point? +<p>From <a href="http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/business-of-it/2010/10/05/oracle-shows-lacklustre-support-for-libreoffice-40090410/">their official reaction</a>, it looks as though Oracle haven’t yet decided how to respond to their <a href="http://www.mealldubh.org/index.php/2010/09/28/942/">adult child leaving home</a> unilaterally. It’s a bit naive to expect them to be wildly enthusiastic. However, having an active community is what makes OpenOffice.org special, and Oracle are wise enough to realise that.</p>
+<p><a href="http://www.documentfoundation.org/lists/announce/msg00006.html">Early indications</a> are that the group of OpenOffice.org volunteers who set up <a href="http://www.documentfoundation.org/">The Document Foundation</a> have read the mood of the community correctly, and that the activist community will follow them into the new Foundation. If so, the old Oracle owned mailing lists, support forums, etc. will simply wither and die, and all the buzz will be around LibreOffice.</p>
+<p>The beauty of open source is that success or failure is visible to the world. In a month or two, everyone will be able to see the pace of development of LibreOffice versus Oracle’s continuing OpenOffice.org, and decide which is the better bet for the future.</p>
+<p>The Document Foundation has got off to a roaring start, but they have to prove themselves in the long haul. If I was an Oracle executive, I’d be playing wait and see too.</p></p>

+<p>The Internet, October 6, 2010 – One full week has gone by since the<br />
+announcement of The Document Foundation, and we would like to share some<br />
+numbers with the people who have decided to follow us since the first<br />
+day.</p>
+<p>The beta of LibreOffice has been downloaded over 80.000 times. The<br />
+infrastructure has expanded dramatically from 25 to 45 working mirrors<br />
+in 25 countries (in every continent), including islands in the Pacific<br />
+Ocean. This number is close to half the mirrors achieved by<br />
+OpenOffice.org during ten years of history of the project.</p>
+<p>People have started to contribute to the code, suggesting features,<br />
+committing patches and filing bugs. In just one week, around 80 code<br />
+contributions (patches, and direct commits) have been accepted in<br />
+LibreOffice from a total of 27 volunteers, several of them newly-won,<br />
+with around 100 developers hanging out on the #libreoffice irc channel<br />
+which is buzzing with activity (around 14,000 messages sent).</p>
+<p>Turning to the wider community, 2.000 people have subscribed to the list<br />
+announce@ to keep up with the latest TDF news, and 300 people to the<br />
+discussion list discuss@, where there has been an average of 100<br />
+messages per day.</p>
+<p>To round up the numbers, there are nearly 600 people following TDF<br />
+tweets, over 150 following the identi.ca TDF account, and over 1.000<br />
+fans on Facebook. The traffic on the server has been in the region of<br />
+500 GB.</p>
+<p>In its only official response to the creation of the Foundation, Oracle<br />
+has stated: âOracle is investing substantial resources in<br />
+OpenOffice.org. With more than one hundred million users, we believe<br />
+OpenOffice.org is the most advanced, most feature rich open source<br />
+implementation and will strongly encourage the Open Office community to<br />
+continue to contribute through www.openoffice.org.â</p>
+<p>The Foundation understands from this that Oracle has no immediate plans<br />
+to support the Foundation, or to transfer community assets such as the<br />
+OpenOffice.org trademark. However, the Foundation hopes this position<br />
+will change as the company sees the volunteer community – an essential<br />
+component of OpenOfficeâs past success – swing its support behind the<br />
+new Foundation. In the meantime, the Foundation will continue software<br />
+development under the LibreOffice brand.</p>

+<p></p><p><b>Strong support for the first week of The Document Foundation</b></p>
+<p>The Internet, October 6, 2010 – One full week has gone by since the announcement of The Document Foundation, and we would like to share some numbers with the people who have decided to follow us since the first day.</p>
+<p>The beta of LibreOffice has been downloaded over 80.000 times. The infrastructure has expanded dramatically from 25 to 45 working mirrors in 25 countries (in every continent), including islands in the Pacific Ocean. This number is close to half the mirrors achieved by OpenOffice.org during ten years of history of the project.</p>
+<p>People have started to contribute to the code, suggesting features, committing patches and filing bugs. In just one week, around 80 code contributions (patches, and direct commits) have been accepted in LibreOffice from a total of 27 volunteers, several of them newly-won, with around 100 developers hanging out on the #libreoffice irc channel which is buzzing with activity (around 14,000 messages sent).</p>
+<p>Turning to the wider community, 2.000 people have subscribed to the list announce@ to keep up with the latest TDF news, and 300 people to the discussion list discuss@, where there has been an average of 100 messages per day.</p>
+<p>To round up the numbers, there are nearly 600 people following TDF tweets, over 150 following the identi.ca TDF account, and over 1.000 fans on Facebook. The traffic on the server has been in the region of 500 GB.</p>
+<p>In its only official response to the creation of the Foundation, Oracle has stated: âOracle is investing substantial resources in OpenOffice.org. With more than one hundred million users, we believe OpenOffice.org is the most advanced, most feature rich open source implementation and will strongly encourage the Open Office community to continue to contribute through www.openoffice.org.â</p>
+<p>The Foundation understands from this that Oracle has no immediate plans to support the Foundation, or to transfer community assets such as the OpenOffice.org trademark. However, the Foundation hopes this position will change as the company sees the volunteer community – an essential component of OpenOfficeâs past success – swing its support behind the new Foundation. In the meantime, the Foundation will continue software development under the LibreOffice brand.</p>

+<p></p><p>The announcement of The Document Foundation has generated a huge amount of buzz in the press, and there are many people who are commenting and speculating about TDF and LibreOffice.</p>
+<p>We are extremely happy for the coverage, but we would like to avoid spreading of inaccurate news in the press which might result from comments of people who are very close to the project but are not recognized spokespersons.</p>
+<p>When you have questions about the project you are free to get in touch with the Steering Committee members or with their deputies, which are listed on this page: http://www.documentfoundation.org/foundation/.
