Avoid building against Head of Commons Httpclient
Hi,
I have modified Gump's project definition for Slide, so that it
(hopefully) builds against the included commons-httpclient.jar. This
should give us working nightly builds again.
Regards,
Ingo

Why do you consider this bad practice?
Other projects e.g Cocoon keep all necessary jars in the CVS.
It considerably lowers the entry barrier for a newbie. Of course
this is less of a problem for a library like slide than for a
application like cocoon.
But it also helps to document which combinations of library
versions are working together and protects you against
the problem, that old versions of a library are not longer
available.

Hi all,
Some questions for you all.
How soon after Commons-HttpClient 2.0 final will Slide 2.0 final be out?
Is there any plans or date for making a Slide 2.0 final?
Regards,
Daniel

Regarding Httpclient, maybe we should remove the jar from CVS and add
it as an external dependency as soon as 2.0 final is released.

Ingo,
this will not work. You will need to add a
<work nested="lib/commons-httpclient.jar"/>
or something similar. Gump only uses the system classpath, so any classpath
additions defined in the Ant file are ignored.
It would be nice if there was a separate project for the 2.0 branch of
Commons-HttpClient, given that the community has decided to follow the path
of revolutionary change. gump@jakarta.apache.org should provide answers to
any questions (philosophical as well as technical ;-) ).

PS: Why is slide now keeping all those JARs in CVS? It is a practice that
wasn't followed before, only for rare circumstances when e.g. JDOM broke
their API in HEAD (similar to the current situation with HttpClient).

with Slide, so...

The nightly builds were compiled against the latest version of Commons
Httpclient found in CVS. Because there are some incompatible API
changes and Slide client is expected to be used with a 2.0 version of
Httpclient I have now removed this dependency.
If you use the nightly builds you do not have to care of CVS. Just use
the commons-httpclient.jar shipping with Slide or (recommended)
replace it with the latest 2.0 release of Httpclient (currently beta-2).

Daniel,
The HttpClient code consists of the 2.0 branch and the 2.1/3.0 current
development "trunk" = CVS HEAD.
Please refer to other resources on the Net about code management, CVS,
tagging and branching.
