2.0 beta1 release: final considerations

Hi folks!

I am still struggeling a bit with the details of how to actually roll
out the 2.0 release, but I guess I am pretty close now.

What I am going to do is

1.) Set a release tag called SLIDE_2_0_BETA1
2.) Run final tests on the server
3.) Have a vote on the dev list and cc the final results to the
pmc@jakarta.apache.org list
4.) Create the folowing distributions
     1.) Full server source distribution
     2.) Binary war/jar distribution
3.) Tomcat 4 bundled binary distribution
4.) Tomcat 5 bundled binary distribution
     5.) Full client source distribution
     6.) Binary client distribution
5.) Sign them
6.) Upload these distributions into
cvs.apache.org/dist/jakarta/slide/2.0-beta3
7.) Update the Jakarta Website to show the release
8.) Announce release at announcements@jakarta.apache.org, Slide dev and user

Does this make sense? I have never done a release/roll out on Jakarta
before, so please check this is no nonsense.

Open questions
1.) I can speak for the server part only, so is the Client part ready
for a release as well?
2.) Should client sources be included in the server source distribution?
3.) My PGP key is only trused by myself, does anyone else want to sign
the distributions? Is is necessary to sign the distribution in the first
place?

Cheers :)
Oliver

my public key's also isolated. at the last count i saw, i was the
bigger offender (in terms of releases signed by an isolated key). not
being trusted by other apache folk didn't stop me signing all those
releases.

though i'd like to get my key signed, that means meeting up
face-to-face with other apache people which is (geographically)
difficult for me. if you're in continental europe, there are a number
of events coming up where there will be an apache presence. subscribe
to community or party if you're interested.

IIRC someone - stephano i think - made a really cool application
showing distances between signers. there are a number of isolated key
signers (especially amongst the europeans where there hasn't been an
apachecon in a while.)

> does anyone else want to sign the distributions?

(i can't answer that ;)

definitely.

the web of trust (though important) is of secondary importance to ASF
releases. the signature is a way that other committers can ensure that
any changes which occur to the release were made by the release manager
who originally signed the release.

this does not mean that i have to trust your key is owned by the real
Oliver Zeigermann just the ASF release manager who choses to call
himself the same.

for some users, not being in a strong web of trust is a bigger issue.
md5 sums from the apache sight are almost certainly good enough for
users so this shouldn't be such an issue but you may have to field
questions from users (i certainly have in the past).

Yes, it would be nice if we could wait just a few days. Apart from the
broken https support the run.bat batch file for the command line
client will not work any more, I guess. That's a trivial task of
course, but I would be thankful if someone working on Windows could
fix and test it right away.

I understand we should wait a bit with the release, is it this what you
want? If so, on problem I guess...

Currently https support is broken. I am waiting for a small fix from
the Commons HttpClient folks, but will include a version patched by
myself, if it takes too long.

No opinion on the other points, sorry.

One other open question. Shall I update the web site with the cleaned
docs of the beta version?

I would say so, what is your impression?

Hi Robert,

nice to have you here again. Having my plan reviwed by someone who has
already done a release is really reassuring :)

I agree it should go into the milestone builds section. That's way I
proposed to upload the release to the this location:

That would be nice :) We are waiting for a patch for the client and then
we can release. I think you will notice when it is time...

are you clear about how to do this? just in you're not, here's what i
suggest:

IMHO this is a beta so it should go in the milestone builds section on
binindex and sourceindex.

a news item should go into the jakarta product news. if you don't want
to do this, then me or tetsuya will pick up most announcements and
post up an item about them.
