TS-837: compile with gcc 4.6.1 with --enable-debug

 -- a.k.a: Strict Aliasing

A nice person on ##workingset provided us with a patch:

I uploaded it to https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/TS-837

someone with a couple of free cycles should take a look at it.
