Re: nightly CVS snapshot from Sep 2003

It seems my ISP has sorted out some SMTP problems and can successfully forward my e-mail to apache.org again...

I had a quick look to confirm that there are no new nightly builds. I am poking around to try to understand how Axis (and some other Apache Web Services) projects are being built nightly. Machines and configuration were changed early to mid-September, when Axis, SOAP and other projects moved out of Apache XML into the new Apache Web Services. While I eventually caught up with how the site and version downloads were being handled, I never noticed that nightly builds were no longer being done (I do my own builds locally when I make changes or track down bugs).

The newest nightly snapshot of Apache SOAP is from 9 Sep 2003. Is
that because there are no changes since then or does the nightly
snapshot machine need a little grease?

Release builds should be done on your local machine and signed by your PGP key on your machine and
then "squirt the distributables to Apache".

You can post these questions to general@ws.apache.org for others to learn from your experience :)

Dims,

Once again you have saved me the work of sifting through mail archives and the Apache site. Thanks!

The one question I still have, which appears to be answered, but I want to be sure. Is there an ASF machine on which I can set up a cron job for nightly builds, or should I do them (and release builds) on my local machine and squirt the distributables to Apache? Information at some of the links you sent leads me to believe I should build on my machine.

Sanjiva,

Thanks so much for offering your help!

I feel able to handle many of the mechanics of getting the code/docs ready for a new release. However, I am completely ignorant of how to "officially" build and place the results in a public directory. This is why there have been no nightly builds since machines, etc., were changed and we moved from xml.apache.org to ws.apache.org. If you know, for example, what Axis does, that would help. If not, I will pested Axis folks until I get an answer, which has been more easily said than done in the past.

I would love a 2.3.2. Previously, when I tried to get help from other committers, no one had any time, since they had either stopped working on Apache projects or had moved to Axis.

If I can get nightly builds running again, though, I suspect I will be able to do a 2.3.2.
