Getting username from full name

Is there a way to get the username of a committer when I have the full name?

Alan

I'm writing some tooling that will help mentors with podlings so there's no manual bits.

If manual searching is intended, I think it is sometimes easier simply to do a web page search in the browser using
<http://people.apache.org/committer-index.html>. To shorten the search, it is handy to choose the part of the known name that is most-likely to not have many collisions. (This might work for HTML scraping too.)

PS: In checking on e-mails committers use other than their @apache.org accounts, there is *some* help in the private page,
<https://id.apache.org/info/MailAlias.txt> (ASF logon required). That also identifies ASF Members.

So fix podlings.xml. All mentors have @apache.org usernames.

Yeah, unfortunately files like podlings.xml have full names for mentors, not usernames.

Thank you for finally being a little more concrete than "it" and
"podling information".

Maybe we can restate the problem in an implementation free statement.

All I want is a single source for all membership data. I'd like the data to be accessible in a language free way, e.g. XML or JSON. Ideally via a rest service.

What if we had podling, board, project information in SVN and individual member information in LDAP. The latter only really needs to be updated/managed by infra. The former can be accessible to members via this REST API.

Thoughts?

Alan

There is some documentation on where various bits of data are held:

https://svn.apache.org/repos/private/documents/records-discuss/datafiles.txt

> I'll turn your question around and ask, what's wrong with having it in LDAP?

One issue is that updating a file in SVN is a lot easier than updating LDAP.
There would need to be a new interface to update the data; probably a
web interface as LDAP support in scripting languages is fairly patchy
at best (and may only be available for some OSes). For example AFAIK
LDAP is not available for Ruby on Windows.

Another issue is that AFAIK LDAP updates are not sent to any e-mail
list; with SVN it's easy to review the changes.

More importantly, podlings.xml is used in various ways to build the
Incubator website and for other purposes.
There is a fair amount of tooling that relies on it, so the file would
probably still be needed.

Retrieving the information from LDAP is relatively expensive.

Having all ASF organization information in a single place has great value.

Volunteers who are attempting to write tooling don't have to go on an "Easter egg hunt" for information, they don't have to deal with the myriad of data formats and scripting languages, data isn't' duplicated all over the place as it is now.

I'll turn your question around and ask, what's wrong with having it in LDAP?

podlings.xml? What is the benefit to ASF from having it in LDAP?

Ahh, ok. So have pchtml.rb output JSON and I can suck the info out from there

You don't see it happening because it's a bad idea or because it's too difficult to do?

Agreed. The question is where. It just makes sense to me to have all this membership information in LDAP.

tbh, I think your best bet is to hook into the people.a.o site build, or
reuse what it does. The culling is already implemented there.

Anyway, to your question: just use a whitelist approach: PMC groups are
safe, PMC committters groups are safe, board membership is safe, ASF
membership is safe (all of those are public knowledge anyway). If you
run into something you don't recognise, omit it.

Been suggested before, I don't see it happening.

I will say, though, that the IPMC should keep track by itself of podling
committership/membership: some podlings have @committters=rw on their
tree and so there is no record anywhere in infra of their personnel
composition.

Perfect!!!!

Is there a foolproof algorithm I can use to cull the operational groups from the results?

Also, I was wondering if it would make sense to store podling information in LDAP instead of podlings.xml. Just a thought for discussion.

Actually, do not use that as is; it is intended for infra consumption
and thus shows memberships in certain operational groups as well. Only
a subset of that script's output information is public.

/usr/local/etc/openldap/scripts/cli/list_memberships

Yes please.

What I'd like to do is to get my stuff working then, I think that we should be changing our core sources of information, e.g. podlings.xml, to use the apache usernames along with the tooling that consumes those sources.

With that said, once I have the usernames, how do I get at the PMC/project membership information?

Neat, looks like the graphs we make at LinkedIn.

I recently did something similar to get the data to make the graph in
this blog post:

http://www.robweir.com/blog/2013/05/mapping-the-asf-part-ii.html

I scraped this ASF page to extract usernames and associated projects
from this ASF page:

http://people.apache.org/committer-index.html

Extracting their full name from that page should be easy as well, but
working from the source data that produced that page might be even
easier.

My code is very ugly Python. If you want to look at it for ideas, let me know.
