Ubuntu LTS 17 PPA Repository Request to Apache
Has anyone requested a PPA repository be set-up for NetBeans?! In this way,
complex installs on the client (user) side would be as simple as two SUDO
commands entered one time only (per Linux workstation):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:apacheprojects/netbeans
sudo apt update
After that, whenever Ubuntu 17.04 or 17.10 are updated (I do this every
day) so is the latest build (work) for NetBeans 9. This reduces the work
for your users by an order of magnitude (or more)...
Great to be here... Walls. Wallace Jackson, MindTaffy

Emi:
This is a user request, I don't set-up PPAs with Ubuntu (I hope Black Magic
Design is doing this for Fusion and Resolve though) as I am a 3D content
developer and i3D Programmer. I would hope that Apache has an
ApacheProjects/ProjectName/ fork with Ubuntu PPA. If not, this is a higher
level request for Apache, but given the number of projects, would be easier
to set-up (on a per project basis, all at once) one time, between Ubuntu
and Apache. Ubuntu would be pleased to accommodate. Tell them I sent you.
If the fork is already set-up, there should be someone who added the other
projects that could add the NetBeans-Dev and NetBeans-Stable subfolders
relatively easily. New install files would then be added to these folders
by Apache Project Managers. WJ

I'd recommend just subscribing to the developers mailing list and starting
a new thread there, just reference this one when you do that.

Re: Ubuntu LTS 17 PPA Repository Request to Apache
Posted by Geertjan Wielenga <ge...@googlemail.com>.
Best to not post to multiple mailing lists at the same time.
I think this series of questions is relevant more to the infrastructure of
NetBeans itself and hence indeed better on the developers mailing list than
this one.
On the users mailing list you'd ask things like "how do I use Apache
NetBeans to do X", while in the developers mailing list you'd ask "how do I
contribute X, Y, or Z to the Apache NetBeans ecosystem or infrastructure".
Subscribing to the developers mailing list is described here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/How+to+Participate

I suppose it's as much a question for users as for developers of NetBeans.
But indeed the developers mailing list would be good too.
In Apache, you scratch your own itch, so Walls you're invited to make this

Re: Ubuntu LTS 17 PPA Repository Request to Apache
Posted by Wallace Jackson <mi...@gmail.com>.
Geert and Emi:
I have PPA set-up for GIMP Stable (2.8.22) and GIMP Dev (2.9.6 currently)
as well as Inkscape, Audacity and others... Obviously the Dev updates more
frequently than the Stable! The same setup would be optimal for NetBeans,
but initially it would be the ppa:apacheprojects/netbeans-dev and then when
NB9 is downloadable next to Java 9 (currently this is 8.2 next to Java 9 on
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html which
may confuse some) a ppa:apacheprojects/netbeans-stable would be added. Each
would be updated on Apache's end as needed; -dev frequently and -stable
infrequently. The user can make the report-bugs/don't-report-bugs call by
simply implementing one of the PPAs! Perfect system, really... Ubuntu is
already reaching a 15% market share, and apps are purported to run 300%
faster under this OS! I switched my Android Studio 3 development over (on
an Intel i7) and it is 30X faster overall... Black Magic Design has ported
Fusion 9 and DaVinci resolve 14 for the same reason. Certain software
requires hyper-optimized OSes, and new media packages and coding packages
fit that bill... The main reason for this request is the elimination of all
but the initial SUDO PPA install/update requests, versus quite a lot of
end-user work to install and update via other OSes... ;) Thanks for
considering this request! Walls. PS: Ubuntu LTS 17.04 is amazing, uses only
250-350MB and has already eliminated swap due to 16GB DDR4 chips becoming
the affordable sweet-spot in systems design (thanks to AMD Ryzen). I have
all 8GB of my IBM ThinkCentre i7 to use for Android Studio 3.0. I hear
Ubuntu LTS 17.10 is even better. If you have not been packaging for Ubuntu
LTS I would add this as soon as possible, as it has much of the OS
momentum. WJ

Re: Ubuntu LTS 17 PPA Repository Request to Apache

This is an interesting idea. I assume you want the PPA for stable
builds? Or for development builds?
We never did .deb packages AFAIK.
Debian itself has .deb packages but for their own NetBeans fork, which
is missing a lot of modules.
Worth putting on the (wish)list.

Hey Walls and welcome!
That sounds like a great plan.
I'm not an Ubuntu user (anymore), so don't know about this, maybe someone
else here does?
And what is needed and what would it take to set up such a repository? Do
you or someone else have experience with this?
Thanks,
Gj
