@srowen this ugly problem is on my list for long time. Until now not filed jira+PR because thought it would be good to wait for https://github.com/apache/spark/pull/22138 and later this PR came. I think we can rename it and add proper doc in a separate jira/PR because of the following:
* The intention of this PR is different and non-breaking
* Since the first mentioned PR is still under discussion and don't see much movement
If you agree happy to create the jira/PR part of the job.
