http://issues.apache.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=39099

           Summary: php build failed due to apxs's command failed with
                    rc=65536 error
           Product: Apache httpd-2
           Version: 2.0-HEAD
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: AIX
            Status: NEW
          Severity: major
          Priority: P2
         Component: Build
        AssignedTo: bugs@httpd.apache.org
        ReportedBy: scott@abcoa.com

I'm using AIX 5.2, Apache 2.2.0 and PHP 5.1.2. The output I got from compiling
PHP is ...

--snip--
Installing PHP SAPI module:       apache2handler
/usr/local/apache2/build/instdso.sh
SH_LIBTOOL='/usr/local/apache2/build/libtool' libphp5.la /usr/local/apache2/modules
rm -f /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so
/usr/local/apache2/build/libtool --mode=install cp libphp5.la
/usr/local/apache2/modules/
cp .libs/libphp5.a /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.a
cp .libs/libphp5.lai /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.la
libtool: install: warning: remember to run `libtool --finish
/usr/local/src/php-5.1.2/libs'
chmod 755 /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so
chmod: /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so: A file or directory in the path
name does not exist.
apxs:Error: Command failed with rc=65536
.
make: *** [install-sapi] Error 1
--snip--

I have narrowed down the problem to the apxs script in PHP's makefile. The
exact command used is

--snip--
/usr/local/apache2/bin/apxs -S LIBEXECDIR='/usr/local/apache2/modules' -S
SYSCONFDIR='/usr/local/apache2/conf' -i -a
-n php5 libphp5.la
--snip--

which give this installation output as below...

--snip--
/usr/local/apache2/build/instdso.sh
SH_LIBTOOL='/usr/local/apache2/build/libtool' libphp5.la /usr/local/apache2/modules
rm -f /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so
/usr/local/apache2/build/libtool --mode=install cp libphp5.la
/usr/local/apache2/modules/
cp .libs/libphp5.a /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.a
cp .libs/libphp5.lai /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.la
libtool: install: warning: remember to run `libtool --finish
/usr/local/src/php-5.1.2/libs'
chmod 755 /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so
chmod: /usr/local/apache2/modules/libphp5.so: A file or directory in the path
name does not exist.
apxs:Error: Command failed with rc=65536
--snip--

Problem is there's no libphp5.so as the libphp5.la and libphp5.a are the only
two things that are found in that directory. I'm unable to build php with this
error.

Also, is it possible for somebody to check in the patch for bug #38108 before or
as part of the next apache version to come out??

Thanks...

Okay, will file a bug at bugs.php.net. When I did some bug searches at
bugs.php.net, some people there say it's not a PHP bug but an Apache bug. So,
it's hard to know who to trust. Thanks...

  You landed in the wrong place, this belongs at PHP. My gut says PHP does
  it's own linking and asks httpd to do the installing. [doh]
