RE: Result was : Re: [Vote] Accept Kai Zheng contribution (Haox) as a sub-project

I like both Fluffy (three head dog) and Kerby. Looks like both are already used if you google them, though not very relevant.
http://www.kerbysfurniture.com/
https://github.com/fluffy/fluffyhome/blob/master/energygraph/apache.tmpl

Can we confirm about Kerby?

Kai

Kerby actually is not a bad name though. It is kind of boring, which is good for security.... ;-)

the idea is to name it as close as possible to relate it to the technology

and IMHO considering the target users (developers and system admins) this
aspect is very important
to bring the product close to them

finally, I understand your point raised here, but I am just stressing that
naming the product based on
the technology it supports can make it easier to remember and discuss about
in the targeted technology
user circle.

And we can definitely instill confidence if Kerby makes setting up and
maintaining a Kerberos server
as painless as possible, like what Ubuntu did for Linux.

As I'm sure everyone here knows trademarks are specific to a product area. The fact that there is a product called ACME and it references a tire doesn't preclude someone else from using it for toothpaste. With that in mind I believe google is our friend. You will not get any help from the ASF when ir comes to pick a name... As
it is virtually impossible to check in all the regions if the name is
already taken : we simply don't have the money/time/expertise to do that.

It all has to do with the perception we want to create and instil. The ASF
has brand power. The product can and should leverage that, but should also
strengthen it.

And we have to consider the trade mark issue. While some names might be
easily registered in certain regions, some countries do have a first-come,
first-serve policy.

Maybe we should solicit the support of ASF Brand Mgt to help us out there?

I do agree that kerby could be seen as a weaker solution than a full
kerberos server.

Now, the thing is to fine a name that is not 'funny', but is not already
taken. Really, when it comes to security, all the names that come to
mind (like safeguard, safhaus, etc) are already used.

Add to that we need a name that is easy to remember, and convey the
right message. Or not : we can find a 'boring' name which is easy to
remember, and is not at all linked to kerberos : car manufactorer does
that all the time for their car (even if sometime it's not really great
: Audi just advertise a new car called e-tron, which literally means

So let's start with some suggestion : what do you propose ?

Though I like a internal nerdy joke as much as the next man, I do have some
reservations with potential names like Fluffy and Kerby. Like many other I
think they are fun names. When I first glance on those names, I thought of
Harry Potter, toys and Herbie.
I believe hey are names for a different application area than

We must be aware that this product already has a competing disadvantage
when compared to Kerberos, and we should not add to that. People might
consider a product like Apache Kerby as the little brother of Kerberos, not
to be taken seriously. We also have to take into consideration that Apache
stands for quality software solutions. I don't think that Apache .....y
does instil the confidence and assurance that we it to have from the get-go.

http://fluffy.com/ exists.

kerby.com is in a DNS parking name, so there is no real company behind it.

There is no similar trademarked names alive in the US :
http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=toc&state=4802%3Apdw8w2.1.1&p_search=searchss&p_L=50&BackReference=&p_plural=yes&p_s_PARA1=&p_tagrepl~%3A=PARA1%24LD&expr=PARA1+AND+PARA2&p_s_PARA2=kerby&p_tagrepl~%3A=PARA2%24COMB&p_op_ALL=AND&a_default=search&a_search=Submit+Query&a_search=Submit+Query

Apache Kerby should be just ok.

We can check on trademarks@a.o if we pick this name.
