REEF virtual meetups?

Hi,

given that we are quite geographically distributed, many of us haven't
met each other. Still, I think spending some synchronous time together
every now and then would be awesome.

Hence, I propose a virtual meetup via the internet:

  * Meet monthly.
  * The agenda would be a presentation on a specific topic by one of
us, followed by discussions of current issues.
  * The meetup would be open to the public.

What do you think? Is this something we should try? If so, we can figure
out the details (tech, time, ...).

OK. If there is no disagreement on this, let's use this schedule.

We also have to consider the time zone differences. It might be hard to
find a common time any longer than that anyhow .

The idea would be to gave rooms in Redmond and Seoul we gather in for
the virtual meetup, and to make those rooms open to the public as well.

I just came back from a workshop. Each day we had talks for 9 or 10 hours.
This is doable. :)

I understand your concern. 2~3 hours is fine to me.

Are you talking about physical local meetups?
I hope to have one once we have more diverse community members in Seoul.

Thanks.

I agree, monthly might be a bit much. Maybe we do it after every
release? That way, we can have presentations on what's new in that
release as well as a discussion of where we want to go next. Also, we
have two de-facto speakers that way: The outgoing and incoming release
managers :-)

That sounds too long to me. It is hard enough to really listen to 2h of
talks, but half a day puts the speakers in the second half at the risk
of not being heard anymore. If we have that much content, I'd favor
splitting the meeting into two.

Agreed.

Of course. We'd have to figure out how to organize that, though.
Technology wise, we can host this on Skype or Hangouts. What do you
think of also having meeting spaces in Redmond, Seoul and maybe LA?

Hi Markus,

Thanks for the suggestion. It's a great idea to have virtual meetups.

Monthly meetups may be too frequent. I'd like to propose the following.
* Meet once every six months (if the community members want to meet more
often (like once every four months)
* A half-day meetup covering three-to-five topics (from multiple
organizations)
* Dedicate two or three people as an organizing committee to run a meetup
* The meetup is open to the public

How does this sound?

Thanks!
