   @wohali : I had all but forgotten that this PR was still waiting around. I've now re-based it, so there are no more conflicts. Beyond that, I've honestly forgotten what additional changes, if any, I had planned for it.  And reading the above comments doesn't jog my memory specifically enough to say.
   
   So I guess that means a review is in order.  If there are still specific changes I should make, I'm happy to do that. If it's too much of a jumble to straighten out, we can always close it, too.
