it used to be that way and caused problems with the encoding of special
characters.

True.  But at least some older versions of svn clients assume(d) text
files (identified by eol-style native) to be in native encoding.  We'll
see what happens once the first person with an encoding other than UTF-8
as native encoding changes the file 8-)
