svn: Error processing command 'append' in 'a/b/c/d'

Hello,

Is anyone familiar with the message in the subject line? This is with
a 1.5.6 linux client, and a 1.5.5 linux server. See below for a
snippet (with obfuscated names):

If it's any clue: if I switch to the "svn" access method, I don't see
any errors from the equivalent command in the example below.

svn merge --accept postpone -r129712:130253
http://snow/svnroot/trunk/a/b/c/d/ a/b/c/d/
--- Merging r129735 through r129917 into 'a/b/c/d':
 C a/b/c/d/foo.c
svn: In directory 'a/b/c/d'
svn: Error processing command 'append' in 'a/b/c/d'
svn: Missing 'dest' attribute in 'a/b/c/d'
svn: Error reading spooled REPORT request response

Thanks,
Kylo
