NEW YORK (CNNfn) -- In an apparent bid to
beat Microsoft Corp. in the emerging intranet
                 market, Netscape Communications Corp. began
offering free copies Monday of its new
                 Netscape ONE software-development tools.
"Netscape ONE unifies into a single platform
the standards of the Internet, such as HTTP,
HTML, LDAP and Java, and a tool chest of
                 open, cross-platform software and technologies
for creating rich, distributed applications on the
Internet and intranets," the company said in a
                 statement.
Netscape said it planned to offer free copies
                 of the product to developers.
The company apparently hopes the giveaway
will prompt programmers to write Internet and
intranet applications compatible with a wide
variety of computer systems, rather than just
                 industry leader Microsoft Windows.
                    Netscape One's technical standards, called
"Corba," apparently aim to directly compete
with a proposed Microsoft standard called
                 ActiveX.
In a related move Monday, Netscape
unveiled JavaScript Version 1.1, an enhanced
version of the company's Java-based scripting
                 language.
