[D] BIRT plugin (hop)

GitHub user wAVeckx created a discussion: BIRT plugin

I have an early version of a BIRT plugin designed to run within a workflow. It enables bursting of BIRT reports based on datasets in Hop.

However, BIRT has a different licensing model. I assume this wouldn't be allowed due to licensing or desired due to the additional size it would add to the Hop codebase. It's probably not permitted, even if users were instructed to download the runtime library and place it in the plugin's lib folder.

If it is allowed, I can work on integrating it. But if not, I’m curious—would it be preferable to create a PR for https://github.com/project-hop/hop-plugins? Or should I just publish it in my own GitHub repository?

didn't know our sample plugins are still at `2.3.0-SNAPSHOT`. We'll need to update that, let your plugin build on a newer Hop and Java versions, and update the assembly to include the Eclipse BIRT binaries. The blog post for my very, very old plugin (2011) is [here](https://b-e-o.blogspot.com/2011/08/pentaho-kettle-birt-output-step.html). Those were pre-github days, can't even find the source code anymore, but I still have a zip with the plugin jar that could be decompiled and ported to Hop. Not sure if there's a sufficient BIRT user base to justify the effort that will require though.

Put my take on a plugin out in my repo for hop-plugin-sample [birt plugin](https://github.com/wAVeckx/hop-plugin-sample/tree/birt)
We can discuss further on my first take on this and your thoughts on where to go from here.

it's been so long that I'd have to look for it and can't check right now. I'll get back to you on that early next week

Cool! Eclipse BIRT uses the eclipse license, which is compatible with the Apache license, so it's ok to integrate in the Apache Hop code base.

If the dependencies become too big, we can add instructions for users to add them themselves, similar to what we do for the LLM plugins.

It's been ages, but I wrote a similar plugin for PDI back in the days. I never ported it to Apache Hop because I thought there weren't enough BIRT users these days.
We could check if it makes sense to merge those two code bases.

Do you have a link to that plugin I could compare with what I have?

One snag I ran into was the tycho p2 that eclipse birt uses. But I came across this [https://github.com/eclipse-birt/birt/issues/625](https://github.com/eclipse-birt/birt/issues/625)
So looks like we will need to wait until 4.20.0 to release to get a maven repo to use. So instead of manual instruction I think it would be best just to wait for this release.

I took a look at your plugin for pentaho. I noticed you had it built for a transformation instead of a job. I built mine as a plugin for a workflow instead of a pipeline. Seemed like the right place, like creating a file, running a as400 command, generating a report. I use it with a copy rows to result in a pipeline and pass the values to another workflow as parameters to run the report and burst. Seemed like the appropriate place for it but maybe not. My other thought was that if it was in a pipeline it would be more for passing a resultset to use in the report. Which would be neat trick but not sure that would even be possible or what I have a need for at the moment.

At this point I have a fork of apache hop and I am working to incorporate it into the mainline with the hope that 4.20.0 is available in maven. Let me know your thoughts and feedback so I am on the right track with how you see this fitting in with apache hop.

the use case to build this as a step in PDI back in the days was to use this for report bursting: loop over a list of customers (and other parameters), and generate a separate pdf for each of them that could be uploaded or mailed out etc. A transformation/pipeline worked best in those situations, but there could be scenarios where a workflow action could work just as well.
