[VOTE] Apache CouchDB 0.8.0-incubating release

Hello,

This is the first release under the patronage of the ASF Incubator.

The community has voted on and approved a proposal to release 0.8.0-incubating.

Unfortunately, we did not have any votes or feedback from our mentors.

Pursuant to the Releases section of the Incubation Policy we would now like to
request the approval of the Incubator PMC to make the release.

Release proposal:

  http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-couchdb-dev/200806.mbox/%3c20080616232144.GA23300@bytesexual.org%3e

Vote result:

Thanks,

AFAIK, Jim gave you some feedback, which leaves just myself in the
totally lazy butt camp. And you're right, I can only apologize for
that. It's just one of those crazy periods in someone's life when
there is time to barely breathe: I noticed the vote and earmarked
some time to do cross-checks, but things and plans changed.

Thanks for kicking my backside into doing the minimum required from a
mentor. I'll try and follow for another couple of weeks and see if I
can keep up, or just resign and leave it to someone else. Meanwhile,
here is my +1.

the incubator doesn't have announcement list but announce@apache.org
is better anyway since it has a much bigger subscriber list

I am a littler surprised by this.

Are you sure the announcement shouldn't me be made to:

  announce at incubator.apache.org

My vote is binding. As for release announcements, you do not (afaik)
need to get them approved by the PRC. They should however, clearly
call the project Apache CouchDB, and also include the standard
incubation disclaimer.

This exceeds the required minimum three +1 votes and the proposal passes.

I shall now make the release and prepare a release announcement.

All of the above. The only list that needs prior approval is announce
at a.o, since that's a widely distributed list. And I'm not completely
sure that the PRC will think it's announce-worthy. That's why I'd
contact PRC sooner than later.

Okay sure, I am still confused about what to do next.

  1) Call RESULTS of this VOTE.
  2) Move the release artifacts to a.o/dist and update couchdb/downloads
  3) Prepare a release announcement and clear it with the PRC
  4) Send release announcement to ???

Which of the following do I send the announcement to:

  announce at a.o
  announce at i.a.o
  couchdb-user at i.a.o

Press releases yes, release announcements no. If PRC has the cycles I
guess they wouldn't mind reviewing also important release
announcements, but so far I have only seen the PRC asserting oversight

No, release announcements are not "announcing the podling".

This section was put in place to avoid companies making PR out of
simply contributing code to Apache and then abandoning the project,
having gotten "free" PR.

But once a podling has jumped through the release hoops, it's
considered proper to announce the milestone.
>

Yes, the PRC at apache dot org needs to approve all announcements. You
can contact them (us) any time for assistance (but you will probably
have to write the press release yourselves).

Okay, great. Thanks.

Paul, is your vote binding? Without it we only have two +1 votes.

If Paul's vote is not binding do we have to wait for Jim?

Secondly, we were concerned with the following:

A podling MUST now be called Apache "Podling-Name" (see Naming below). A podling
and affiliated persons can issue press releases that reference the podling,
but cannot issue press releases with the specific intent of announcing the
Podling. Podling can conduct informal pr activities, such as media outreach,
blog publicity, etc. The ASF will not issue any press releases for any podling
at this stage. However, the Public Relations Committee MUST review any
releases by affiliated organizations or groups to ensure they comply with
  these branding guidelines.

  http://incubator.apache.org/guides/branding.html

Does this apply to the release announcements?

Do I have to run them past someone?

Thanks,

Once I call the results and move the artifacts to www.apache.org/dist what

Only votes from Incubator PMC members are binding, so you need three
of these, but it is not required that those three are mentors.

We like to see mentors actively involved in releases (at least I do)
because that shows that they're following their podlings, and allows
the Incubator to scale by delegating to mentors as much as possible.
But it's not a requirement to have +1s from all your mentors - people
are sometimes understandably busy with other things (such as Life
Outside The ASF ;-)

This confuses me a little, I thought that to pass the Incubator VOTE we needed
three +1 votes, and that committers votes are non-binding.

We have three +1 votes now and three days has passed, can I call the results?

I don't think you need votes from *all* your mentors to pass the
release vote, but having no mentor votes (which has now been fixed by
Ted's vote) was worrying.

I haven't looked at the release yet so cannot vote at this point, but
if others have time to review it I think you'll be good to go.

+1, since it leaves me as a single point of failure.

I apologise for this, I should have mentioned explicitly that the vote/feedback
was missing from the second round VOTE, not the first round.

It still concerns me that we have not heard anything from our other mentors.

Fantastic!

Are you happy with me updating the MD5/SHA files as outlined previously?

I was on vacation all of last week, which is why I didn't vote. I did
give you feedback about the initial tarball, which was missing a
NOTICEs file.

Since that has been fixed, I am happy to vote:

+1

Can I alter the build to produce a zip, re-tag 0.8.0, and re-call the vote
directly on the general Incubator list?

I think this makes sense. Are there any objections to me doing this now?

Yes, this concerns me too. The only binding votes are from committers.

With regard to the format, the CouchDB team should decide whether to
release in zip, tar, gz, or whatever format. Every community's user
base is different and my only requirement is that the release includes
sources in at least one format. Everything else is optional.

And in my opinion, the vote is for the primary release artifacts and
I'm perfectly fine with actually changing the checksums and/or
signatures while the vote is open. If there are any +1 votes on the
previous (correct but improperly formatted) artifacts I'd still count
them.

I've only looked at the .asc and .md5 checksums and they're ok (I
don't use an automated md5 verifier).

What concerns me is the mentors who have not voted (maybe old news?)

Great stuff.

As no one has voted yet, would there be any problem with me updating the format
of the MD5 and SHA files now, while the vote is still open?

Though utilities for all major compression formats are available for all major
platforms, not all platforms support all major compression formats by
default. Users find it convenient to download the distribution compressed in a
familiar format that is easy to decompress on their platform. It is therefore
recommended that each type of distribution is shipped in a variety of compressed
formats. Ship at least one of tar.gz, bz or bz2 for UNIX and linux (but note
  this). Ship zip for windows.

CouchDB does not currently support Windows, so providing a zip seems redundant.

Personally, I think it's entirely up to the project to decide in which
formats they want to make their releases available. Do you really need
a zip, or are you asking for it just because of convention? Or more
generally (and mostly to couchdb-dev@), are there potential CouchDB
users who would be better served by a release in zip format?

Lack of zip is signifcant, IMO.

Hashes - not critical.

You could just use an editor to remove the spaces.

Or use
gpg --print-md SHA1 < [fileName] | sed -e's/ //g' > [fileName].sha

At least the data is all on one line, unlike some I have seen ...

Yes, the artifacts are the same as in the original proposal.

I had missed this fact, providing a zip archive will be no problem.

> 2) the md5 and sha hash files have an unusual format; most automatic

I took the release signing from the following document:

  http://www.apache.org/dev/release-signing.html

Which states:

  gpg --print-md MD5 [fileName] > [fileName].md5
  gpg --print-md SHA1 [fileName] > [fileName].sha

I changed this slightly to:

  gpg --print-md MD5 < [fileName] > [fileName].md5
  gpg --print-md SHA1 < [fileName] > [fileName].sha

Are either of these the correct method to use?

Should md5sum and sha1sum be used instead? If this is the case I am guessing I
should propose a correction of the release signing documentation.

Are these issues significant enough to block the release?

Thanks,

Assuming you are referring to the artefacts at:

http://people.apache.org/~nslater/dist/

1) there is only a tar.gz archive - it is normal to provide zip
archives as well.

2) the md5 and sha hash files have an unusual format; most automatic
hash checkers expect the hashes without embedded spaces.
