Creating W3C log files for apache
Hi,
I having a problem getting apache to generate W3C standard logs, as we use
a program called WebStats that collects the logs generated by our IIS
servers, now we have some clients that require reporting on their site,
but we run those under apache on RH 7.1.
I can get apache to generate the required fields to be W3C 1.0 complient,
but I'm having a problem to actually get it to generate the headers below
at the top of each file:
(example taken form IIS)
#Version: 1.0
#Date: 2001-01-03 09:12:12
#Fields: date time c-ip cs-username ........
Iam using the customlog directive to get it to create the required fields,
but I cannot find anything in the docs or the site to generate the
headers above that are part of the w3C standard.
whithout these headers (AFAIK), the logformat does not comply to the w3C
standrard, as the programs that read theses logs (in our case WebStats)
use these to determine to fields.
Thanks in advance
Mark

AH....A good suggestion. A few days ago, on my error log I kept seeing
errors that said "httpd.pid overwritten -- Unclean shutdown of previous
Apache run?"
I didn't know if someone was trying to change my httpd.pid so i set the file
properties to read only. When I rebooted this morning, it was the first
reboot since setting the httpd.pid file properties to read only. When I
looked in the error log, I found a entry for the above error and also an
entry saying "Apache.exe could not log pid file". So I changed the file
properties back and the service started the next time I tried it.
I guess the KISS (keep it simple stupid) rule applies in this case
Thanks for the suggestion, it really did help

Did you check the eror_log and access_log to see why Apache didn't start?

apache 2.0.36 service problem with W2K
Posted by JMassengill <ma...@jlm.dns2go.com>.
I am running Apache 2.0.36 on a Windows 2000 Server on a home built
Pentium 200MMX that has a Gigabyte GA-586-HX motherboard with 64MB of ram
installed. (yes, I know, it isn't a power house of a system) It has one
Seagate 4.3 GB SCSI Hard drive (the boot drive) and one Maxtor 15GB IDE Hard
drive.
My problem is this. Last night I downloaded from windowsupdate and
received two files, one was the Windows Critical Update Notification tool
and the other was Q320206: Security Update. The windows critical update
notification tool is used to inform the system user that there is new
updates available on the widows update site. The Security update resolves
the "Authentication Flaw in Windows Debugger can Lead to Elevated
Privileges" security vulnerability.
After finishing the download, a window popped up on my screen asking if
i wanted to reboot the computer. I clicked on "NO" and went to bed and left
the server running. This morning when I rebooted my server, the apache
service popped up this error message in the windows 2000 system log:
"Windows could not start the Apache2 on Local
Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log.
If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact
the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code1"
I have searched the web and read all the documentation that came with
Apache 2.0.36 with no results.
I have reinstalled Apache 2.0.36 and I have removed the two items were
downloaded with no change in results.
I am new to Apache
Thanks in advance for the help.

Cheers, I I had to end up altering the perl script to include the Headers
and rotate the logs every day at the same time.
But It would of been nice if apache supported the header fields :-)
But thats just me moaning :-)
Thanks for the advice

have you taken a look at the rotatelogs utility distributed with Apache,
maybe you could extend it too to do what you want

No, its defined at
http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-logfile.html
It is not really "standard" in that sense. it is just standard in that that
was what one of the early webservers did it and all the others followed it.
Something similar happened with CGI
But i think the real reason it is not supported is that most tools either
expect the format or allow you to specify it by some other means (such as
the tool's config file)
Cheers

oh :-(
I ended up writing a small perl script to put those headers in and to also
switch the logs round every 24 hrs.
It seams weird that a world wide/class web server cannot write files in
W3c format (Or am I mistaken that this format is on for IIS?)

I do not think there is such a facility in Apache
I suggest to create that header by hand before starting to log hits or
add it to the beginning before processing it with a script
