The standard procedure is to deprecate for one release. The method is public in 1.x, but anyone who calls the method in 2.x will not work with viewfs. The call "succeeds", jobs are submitted, but the tasks will all fail a slow death. We may want to consider bending the rules and downgrading the visibility in 2.x as well as trunk.
