the gui designer issue: Balsamiq + Napkee

hi, I just made a decision NOT to purchase the Flash Builder IDE, for one
their license is tied to the computer and not to the user and I need to be
able to both work on Flex on my Win notebook and Mac Mini. Anyhow, in
giving up Flash Builder I have given up on the following elements that are
crucial for my workflow:

   1. GUI Designer (important)
   2. FlexUnit testing framework (sort of important I"m checking FlexMonkey
but I would like unit testing for AS3)
   3. HttpMonitor

#1

after much research and stress I think I have found something that gets me
pretty far on the GUI design front and that's the combo of using the
Balsamiq Mockup product and Napkee , something which integrates with
Balsamiq to generate Flex 3 MXML. Flex 4 MXML output will be I'm told by
the company available this summer. That along with the fact that JetBrains
has a "visual editor" for MXML I think will cover me pretty well.

Just wondered what you all that have been around in the Flex universe think
about said approach. Is this approach helpful to others ? Or who has been
down that path who can shed light on the approach ?

#2

I have not found a testing framework for AS3 that has a visual test runner
available i.e. like what's there in Flash Builder but maybe I have just
missed it ?

#3

I"m basically using Flex as my front end to both Ruby / Python JSON based
http services . Its a very nice to have something that allows me to quickly
visualize response/ request and formatted data payloads. Flash Builder did
a good job. I found a couple alternatives , notably Charles Http debugger
proxy. My only problem here is that again I want to use a cross platform
tool that has a license tied to the individual and not to the computer i.e.
save me the extra 50 bucks of paying for another license so that I can run
on my Mac Mini.

Any suggestions here ?

thanks al, hope its an appropriate enough question for this list.

thanks, I guess when I did not see how a file template for a Flex unit test
I assumed lack of support. Anyhow, I am now getting off subject ,
unfortunately nobody has commented on their thoughts as a substitute for
the UI designer.

for those interested i.e. here's a link to a blog showng FlexUnit support
in IntelliJ:

FlexUnit integrates with FlashBuilder, FDT and IntelliJ to provide a visual test run and has 2 or 3 browser based visual test runners should you choose to go that route as well

really ? ok, I don't see FlexUnit as a framework available to the project.
I'll inquire in the IDEA forums , thanks.
I sent an email to Charles about that , the language on his site seems to
state the opposite. Hopefully, it looks like a well thought out tool.

You should be able to run Charles on both your computers. As far as a
visual test runner you can use FlexUnit with IntelliJ's test runner.

I spoke at length to Adobe sales and they were very clear that I could not
with one license of at least Flash Builder 4.6 standard (approx $250.00 )
be able to effectively install and run them both on my Win 7 tablet and on
my Mac Mini and of course I don't mean simultaneous use.

That was the reason I did not go ahead with the purchase.

It's actually against the EULA to install your license on two OSs:
http://tinypic.com/r/nyh1xt/5
The entire EULA is here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/eulas/pdfs/Gen_WWCombined-20110105_1512.pdf
They want you to buy one for each OS.

This is another reason to go with IntelliJ, besides being a superior
editor, they don't have this kind of restriction in their EULA.
This is the relevant piece: http://tinypic.com/r/2u7adrp/5
The entire IntelliJ EULA is here:

Just for the record -- Flash Builder Licenses are not tied to a particular
platform like the creative suites. The 1+1 license can be split between
two different OSs (this is how I have mine setup -- Win for Desktop, Mac
for Laptop).

donation of ui designer to apache flex? (was: the gui designer issue: Balsamiq + Napkee)

Posted by sébastien Paturel <se...@gmail.com>.
Is there any news about the idea to give the flash builder ui designer
to apache flex, as its a flex app?

they don't allow cross - os use.

I feared that many would not think it pertinent to this list. My only
glimmer of hope was that since Adobe is dropping the UI designer that the
Balsamiq + Napkee combo would give Apache Flex future users i.e. especially
newbies like me hope i.e. that there's an alternative approach.

thanks

The Adobe licenses allow you to install it on two computers; although
I'm not sure if they allow it to be cross-OS

I don't think it is; as I don't feel this question was related to
continued development of Flex.
