Tamil Translation

I visited page openoffice.org/ta. The Tamil font is not displayed properly.
It is almost not readable. If you could send me the original HTML file of
this page I can correct it, so that the page can display correctly. A
sample page which correctly displays tamil is as follows

http://3frames.in/kadal/neekadavulaa-II/. It may not take much time to do
the correction.

The pages are in
http://people.apache.org/~pescetti/tamil-test/ta-svn.zip but indeed it
might make sense to start from scratch if they need to be heavily
updated. The source code mentions a font named "TSCu_Paranar" which
might have been the one used when writing the pages.

I looked at these pages via Google Translate. They are all
out-of-date and would need much more work, beyond the fonts, to be
very useful.

I wonder if we good "bootstrap" ourselves to a better Tamil website,
and translation, by doing some specific recruitment in this area?

We would start by replacing the Tamil page with a simple page that
says, in Tamil:

"Welcome to the Tamil Project at Apache OpenOffice !

The most recent translation of OpenOffice for Tamil is OpenOffice
3.3.0. This can be downloaded here:

Mac
Linux-32 RPM
Linux-32 DEB
Linux-64 RPM
Linux-64 DEB

The current Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 has many improvements, in
performance, interoperability and security, along with new features.
However, we cannot release this version for Tamil since the
translation is incomplete, only 93% done. We welcome Tamil
volunteers interested in helping complete and improve the translation,
maintain this Tamil webpage, and help promote OpenOffice in India, Sri
Lanka.and other Tamil-speaking regions. If you are interested in
helping, more information can be found here:
http://openoffice.apache.org/translate.html."

We would then look for ways to promote this call for volunteers with
the right audiences. Once we have 3-4 volunteers able to help in
this area then we would be in good shape.

Dear Andrea,
Thanks for the reply. I am away from my usual place and I have some
limitation to access internet So my replies may be a bit late.

The web pages test-1 and test-2 there are minor problem. The small dots
above letters are in the wrong place and makes readable a bit difficult and
slower. What is required the font used in preparing Tamil content. If the
pages few (less than 10), I can type it so that font rendering is 100%
correct. Regarding 3rd test page, I have attached a png file. The marking
in black is 100% unreadable. (A different font might have been used to
prepare this content). The red marked area is with minor problem like
test-1 and test-2. But in test-3, all remaining text is 100% correct.

If the Tamil pages are few, send me those pages, I will make 100% correct,
and send it back to you. (It will be better if you could provide the font
name used in the content preparation). I know people who are more
knowledgeable in Tamil. I can improve the content if possible taking their
help.

(moving this answer to the discussion about the website translation, to
avoid confusion with the program translation).

Let me see if we can get this right: I created three tests to see how we
can solve it.

http://people.apache.org/~pescetti/tamil-test/test-1/
This is the homepage text (main body only) as it is in SVN. You say this
is broken. Needless to say, I trust you on this, since I can't read Tamil.

http://people.apache.org/~pescetti/tamil-test/test-2/
This is the homepage text (main body only) as it is in SVN. I added your
TTF font in the same directory, doesn't seem to make a difference.

http://people.apache.org/~pescetti/tamil-test/test-3/
This is the homepage text (main body only) with an HTML <link> directive
to import the file
http://people.apache.org/~pescetti/tamil-test/test-3/tamil.css , that in
turn defines the Tamil TTF font with @font-face and applies it to
paragraphs (for this initial test this is enough). This looks different
than #1 and #2 on my system.

Now, is test-3 a proper rendering of Tamil as you would like to see it?
If it is, we can implement the change on the whole site (the font you
supplied can be freely used and redistributed); the only issue would be
that apparently Internet Explorer does not support @font-face with TTF
fonts, but this would simply mean that Internet Explorer users will
continue to see the site as it is now.

Regards,
   Andrea.

The key strokes are different for different group of fonts. So always the
font is required, to display the Tamil text correctly. Tomorrow, I will
send a sample file which I uploaded in a my website, and I will let you
know, how I used css to control the text size, color. This is the mistake
your Tamil webpages are not readable

Well, Rob already answered you in the (unrelated) discussion about Tamil
PO files. Anyway:
- For a sample page, download (right-click) index.html from
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/content/ta/
- We don't send any fonts together with the page, and we don't know if a
special font was used when editing the page (but its content is
independent from the font used by the author)
- CSS information indeed will always reach a "fallback" sans-serif font
before reaching any specific fonts.

Of course, without knowing if the screenshot I posted looks right or
wrong, and without any specific details from you on how to fix it, it's
hard to try and fix the pages. If you could at least send the relevant
CSS and font file (it's important to know its license too) we can have a
look. Note: the mailing list will ignore attachment, links to online
resources preferred.

Regards,
   Andrea.

Kindy send me a sample page along with the font file (Tamil Font). I use
css for the correct rendering of Tamil text. The font has to be uploaded
where the html page is located. Then the page will look same across all
browsers /OS

You were already sent the SVN link:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/openoffice/ooo-site/trunk/content/ta/
(note that you may need to set character encoding to UTF-8 manually in
your browser, since SVN pages may be served with wrong encoding).

Actually, what's wrong with the current version? If it helps, a
screenshot of how I see it is at http://imagebin.org/237940 and, while I
don't understand a word, I don't notice major font rendering differences
with respect to your link.

The pages you have seen are currently unmaintained, but we will be happy
to make any changes you suggest. Just note that the HTML you see is then
embedded in a site template which adds elements and a header, so some
changes are easily done and some are quite hard. But if you can start by
letting us know how index.html should be modified, we will be on the
right track!

Regards,
   Andrea.
