I've added a second patch that removes that dependency entirely - I can't find any reason to believe that this is an actual install-time / run-time dependency. I also set up 2 clusters, 1 with Lucid, hadoop-native and libzip1, and another with Precise, hadoop-native, but no libzip. I played with as many compression related features as I could think of and couldn't come across any differences.
Please correct me if I'm missing something, but I think we really can just drop this dependency entirely, especially since misc:depends and shlibs:depends are in use.
