JackRabbit & ModeShape JCAs Under TomEE
Hello --
I've been trying to deploy either the JackRabbit 2.10.x or ModeShape 4.3.x Resource Adapters under
TomEE Plus 1.7.1 (OpenJDK 1.7.0_79, running on Ubuntu Linux), without much success. The RARs are
dropped into the apps directory, and unpack correctly but there is an issue with the loading.
With JackRabbit, the error I get in the log is:
WARNING: Unexpected exception resolving reference
java.lang.NullPointerException
at java.io.File.<init>(File.java:277)
at org.apache.jackrabbit.jca.JCARepositoryManager.createNonTransientRepository(JCARepositoryManager.java:122)

at org.apache.jackrabbit.jca.JCAManagedConnectionFactory.createConnectionFactory(JCAManagedConnectionFactory.java:153)
With ModeShape, the error I get in the log is:

at org.modeshape.jca.JcrRepositoryHandle.<init>(JcrRepositoryHandle.java:59)

TomEE then complains with:
SEVERE: Exception processing Global JNDI Resources
I suspect that the root cause is the same in both cases: the path where the repository is to be
created is being passed as a NULL value. The obvious question is: why?
Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,

Hi,
You should be able to add an alias in the
$CATALINA_HOME/conf/system.properties file
openejb.connector.jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0.aliases=jcr-repository
openejb.connector.jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0.skip-default=true
https://rmannibucau.wordpress.com/2013/09/25/tomee-and-resource-adapters/ is
where I found this information from.

would:

work?

Re: JackRabbit & ModeShape JCAs Under TomEE

Hi --
Quick question: now that I have the JackRabbit Resource Adapter up and running, I would like to
be able to address it by a name other than jackrabbit-2.8.0. Currently this is hard-coded into the
lookup:
Context initialContext = new InitialContext();
Context envContext = (Context) initialContext.lookup("openejb:Resource");
Repository repository = (Repository) envContext.lookup("jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0");
I think TomEE uses the name of the extracted directory under ./apps to determine the JNDI reference
name. What I would like to do is to be able to reference it like this:
Repository repository = (Repository) envContext.lookup("jcr-repository"); or perhaps
Repository repository = (Repository) envContext.lookup(STRING_JCR_REPOSITORY_NAME);
to provide a level of indirection, enabling me to easily swap out repository implementations. Where in
TomEE can I specify an alternate JNDI name?
Many thanks,

Hi Romain, Uday --
I can report success! :D
1. The JackRabbit Resource Adapter is indeed bound to "java:openejb:Resource/jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0RA".
I accessed it with the following code:
Context initialContext = new InitialContext();
Context envContext = (Context) initialContext.lookup("openejb:Resource");
Object o = envContext.lookup("jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0RA");
System.out.println(o.getClass().getCanonicalName());
However, this returns an instance of the actual ResourceAdapter interface, which is not what I'm looking
for, so I tried this instead:
Context initialContext = new InitialContext();
Context envContext = (Context) initialContext.lookup("openejb:Resource");
Object o = envContext.lookup("jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0");
System.out.println(o.getClass().getCanonicalName());
This returns an instance of javax.jcr.Repository, which is precisely what I'm looking for. From here I was able
to store and retrieve XML in/from the content repository.
2. My issues with the JNDI tree were actually caused by me overriding the Content environment
properties in my tree printing code - the joys of cut & paste. Romain's suggestion to look at SystemInstance.get().getComponent(ContainerSystem.class).getJNDIContext()
made me realise what the issue was. Once that was resolved, the adapter's entries showed up correctly.
3. This kind of info is no doubt scattered across several web pages, but hopefully once this makes it into the mailing
list archives, it'll be easier for others to find. :)

Hi
First of all ensure that jcr-2.0.jar is included in the TomEE lib directory. After that you can get Resource adaptor instance via the following statements:
1- Context jndiContext = SystemInstance.get().getComponent(ContainerSystem.class).getJNDIContext();
jndiContext.lookup("openejb:Resource/jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0RA”) OR
jndiContext.lookup(“openejb/Resource/jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0RA”)
2- new InitialContext().lookup("java:openejb/Resource/jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0RA”)

This is an aggregated tree not listable as this IIRC.
SystemInstance.get().getComponent(ContainerSystem.class).getJNDIContext()
is the one.

Hi Romain --
Under the "java:global" tree I get
*****PRINTING java:global JNDI TREE*****
-->openejb: org.apache.openejb.core.ivm.naming.IvmContext
-->openejb: org.apache.openejb.core.ivm.naming.IvmContext
-->ConfigurationInfo!org.apache.openejb.assembler.classic.cmd.ConfigurationInfo: org.apache.openejb.core.ivm.naming.BusinessRemoteReference
There is nothing available under either "java:openejb" or "openejb:Resource". Basically, the end
result I'm looking for is to be able to do the following (pseudo Java):
Context initialContext = new InitialContext();
Context envContext = initialContext.lookup("java:comp/env" | "java:global");
java.jcr.Repository repository = envContext.lookup("openejb/jackrabbit" | "ra/jackrabbit"): //or whichever name it's mapped to.
So which tree would the resource adapter(s) be mapped under?
Many thanks,

Magically no but jndi tree is not unique so you surely didnt dump the ra or
openejb resources one.

For datasources right? Tomee.xml in conf/ or resources.xml in the app.

I should be able to access the resource adapter as openejb:Resource/jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0RA, correct?
However, having dumped the JNDI namespace from "java:" downwards, there is no sign of jackrabbit-jca-2.8.0RA
or anything else related to jackrabbit. Are JCA resources auto-magically mapped into the JNDI namespace, or
must they be specified?
Also, all of the examples I've looked at use JBoss as the application server and specify the use of a ds.xml file -
what's the equivalent of the ds.xml file in TomEE?

Re: JackRabbit & ModeShape JCAs Under TomEE

Hi Romain --
You set me on the right path: the JackRabbit JCA's ra.xml wasn't configured correctly. It was
looking for explicit definitions for the repository directory and the associated repository.xml
file. I added those like this
<config-property>
<config-property-name>HomeDir</config-property-name>
<config-property-type>java.lang.String</config-property-type>
<config-property-value>repository</config-property-value>
</config-property>
<config-property>
<config-property-name>ConfigFile</config-property-name>
<config-property-type>java.lang.String</config-property-type>
<config-property-value>repository.xml</config-property-value>
</config-property>
and it appears to have deployed fully, with no errors However, when using JackRabbit in embedded
mode (and I assume this applies to the WAR also), such configuration does *not* have to be explicitly
defined, and sensible defaults are written to repository.xml on first use; I wrongly assumed that this
behaviour was also a property of the JackRabbit Resource Adapter and that I didn't understand
TomEE's needs correctly.
I'm going to assume the ModeShape JCA has the same issue; I'll probably dig into that a bit later. Once
again, many thanks for your help.
