Hi Pieter,

That's a configuration setting of the compiler plugin:

<build>
    <plugins>
      <plugin>
        <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId>
        <version>RELEASE</version>
        <configuration>
          <compilerVersion>1.4</compilerVersion>
          <source>1.4</source>
          <target>1.4</target>
          <debug>true</debug>
          <showDeprecation>true</showDeprecation>
          <showWarnings>true</showWarnings>
          <optimize>false</optimize>
        </configuration>
      </plugin>
    </plugins>
</build>

okay, shame on me, found an answer to my question in the docs :)

add following to the build tag:
         <plugins>
             <plugin>
                 <groupId>org.apache.maven.plugins</groupId>
                 <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId>
                 <configuration>
                     <source>1.5</source>
                     <target>1.5</target>
                 </configuration>
             </plugin>
	</plugins>
