Jetspeed 1.5 Hangs with No Exception
We have been chasing a performance issue for days with Jetspeed 1.5. The
details are below:
- We are testing our implementation of Jetspeed 1.5 using load testing
software (WAPT 3.0).
- Across three different platforms and two different servers, we are
experiencing intermittent "hangs" on the servlet container. When the
server hangs, it stops responding to new requests (connections are not
refused, but requests are never responded to -- an end user might
observe the "throbber" in their browser spin continuously).
- The affected platforms include FreeBSD 5.2.1 RELEASE, FreeBSD 4.10
RELEASE, Slackware 10.0 default install using1.4.2_04. Curiously,
similar tests on Windows 2000 work fine.
- The test has been done on Tomcat 4.x, 5.x and Jetty, with the same
results.
- The test begins by simulating 7 concurrent users, and proceeds to test
8, then 9 ... up to 20. On affected systems, it fails at somewhere
between 11 and 16 concurrent users.
- The test simulates a user by logging into the portal, doing some
user-type activity with one of our portlets, and logging off. User type
activity has included reading and writing to a database, which is mySQL
4.0.16. We have also tried not using any of our portlets, for fear of a
coding error causing this problem, and using built-in administrative
portlets (group, role, user browser).
- The "hang" appears to happen "randomly" - that is, it doesn't occur
consistently on one page or at one part of the test.
- The database server continues to function without difficulty as this
occurs. Also, when running with Apache/Tomcat, other web sites on the
same system, other web sites continue to respond after Jetspeed stops
responding.
Where do we go from here? Is this a Jetspeed bug?
Jason
