maybe one idea could be at the lance format as tier on S3 https://github.com/lance-format/lance
possible advantages:
- its optimized for S3 https://www.lancedb.com/blog/a-metadata-benchmark-of-lance-delta-lake-and-iceberg-on-s3
- its possible to do adding new columns without rewrite
- one could query it also using duckdb
