[jira] [Created] (FLUME-1297) Flume tests should wait for a few seconds for agent to start.

Hari Shreedharan created FLUME-1297:
---------------------------------------

Summary: Flume tests should wait for a few seconds for agent to start.
                 Key: FLUME-1297
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FLUME-1297
             Project: Flume
          Issue Type: Bug
            Reporter: Hari Shreedharan

The tests fail intermittently because the agent has not started up when the test client tries to connect. Adding a sleep for a few seconds for Avro to start up should fix it.

FLUME-1298 itself cannot fix this, that just makes startup faster. We should make sure that the agent is completely started before the test starts up. I am having quite a bit of trouble, since the RpcClient tries to connect to the agent before the AvroSource starts up. I recommend fixing this asap.

There is already a sleep for 3000 ms. I am seeing failures quite consistently when HBASE_HOME is set. When HBASE_HOME is not set the test works fine. I guess this is because when HBASE_HOME is set, the script takes longer to start the agent itself, because of the extra processing it does. Maybe we should clear all the environment variables instead?

When we add tests which require environment variables it should set them up anyway and we can increase the sleeps at that time. Does that make sense?

Hari Shreedharan commented on FLUME-1297:
-----------------------------------------

This test fails every time if we simply change the channel from memory to file, because it takes longer to start up. If this test fails even if there is nothing wrong, we should probably just disable them for now - until we can make sure that the test starts after the agent is completely up.
