about the thread "tag to truncate text"
Somebody knows what was the end of this thread? Any solution was developed?

You could simply remove the exception being thrown on line 57 of
CaseConverter.java.
I will submit a patch to make the case conversion optional.

I went a step further and added a appendEllipsesDuringOutput and
appendEllipsesDuringInput so it's completely customizable. Otherwise
it does straight truncation.

Currently, this is only an output converter. I'd also like it work
as an input converter as well unless there's an objection. As an
inputconverter, I'll probably drop the elipses, though.
Feel free to do it.

Julian (and Rogerio),
Is there any reason why we can't make getAsObject also call
format(value.toString())?
Currently, this is only an output converter. I'd also like it work
as an input converter as well unless there's an objection. As an
inputconverter, I'll probably drop the elipses, though.

I'm changing the name to convertStringUtils (StringUtils Converter)

My mistake -- simply don't specify the format attribute and no case
conversion will occur.

I pushed some code to sandbox last week which includes a string converter tag
which truncates text, changes case and capitalizes. I don't think its made
it into the build yet but you can find it on JIRA
