Yes, it is probably not critical, but it is also a very easy, one-character fix.

Most files just have a ALv2 license statement, not copyright statement, so only the NOTICE file need be updated.

It is perfectly fine with me if I'm out-voted on this one, which seems to be the case.
Votes are not required to be unanimous.

Is there a follow-up JIRA for the security item?

Running centos 6.7 and Cloudera 5.7.6 with Kerberos enabled.
I installed the source files for Trafodion release 2.2.
Successfully build binaries.

However, when I ran the python installer, it failed:

Host [rm1.novalocal]: Script [hdfs_cmds.py] ..................................... [ FAIL ]

Failed to run command su - hdfs -c '/usr/bin/hdfs dfs -chgrp 18/01/28 21:15:25 WARN security.UserGroupInformation: PriviledgedActionException as:root (auth:KERBEROS) cause:javax.security.sasl.SaslException: GSS initiate failed [Caused by GSSException: No valid credentials provided (Mechanism level: Failed to find any Kerberos tgt)]
18/01/28 21:15:25 WARN ipc.Client: Exception encountered while connecting to the server : javax.security.sasl.SaslException: GSS initiate failed [Caused by GSSException: No valid credentials provided (Mechanism level: Failed to find any Kerberos tgt)

There is a valid HBASE ticket:

[centos@rm1 distribution]$ sudo su hdfs
bash-4.1$ klist
Ticket cache: FILE:/tmp/krb5cc_494
Default principal: hdfs/rm1.novalocal@TRAFKDC.COM

Valid starting Expires Service principal
01/28/18 21:11:10 01/29/18 21:11:10 krbtgt/TRAFKDC.COM@TRAFKDC.COM
                renew until 02/02/18 21:11:10

I was able to manually run the hdfs requests when connected as hdfs user.

After manually running the HDFS steps, the installation step completed and trafodion database was initialized. However, neither authentication or authorization was enabled. I was able to manually enable both and successful run some SQL queries.

I am concerned that when security features are enabled, that things do not work as correctly.

Hi, Steve,

The policy page does requires the year to reflect the distribution of the CURRENT and past versions of the product. It we should update it. But does that mean we have to update all headers in most source files, or only the NOTICE file?

And I think this is NOT that strict, I checked a few other Apache projects:

Kylin 2.2.0 , in NOTICE, it is 2014-2016, but Kylin 2.2.0 released at 2017 Nov ZooKeeper 3.4.8 , NOTICE file said 2009-2015, but ZooKeeper 3.4.8 released at 2016 Feb Drill 1.12 , NOTICE file said 2013-2014, Drill 1.12 released at 2017 Dec HBase is very good, update NOTICE for most releases, but the 2.0.0-beta-1 released at 2018 Jan, and the NOTICE file not update the year, still 2007-2017 Kudu 1.2.0, NOTICE file is 2016, but it released at 2017 Jan Hive 1.2.2 , NOTICE file is 2008-2015, 1.2.2 released at 2017 April ...

Hadoop is very strict at this, not only update year for each release, but also lists all third-party license header in its NOTICE file.

So in sum, I think it will be good for Trafodion to strictly follow the rule in the next release, but it is not strict for now. Could you consider to change your vote ?

Thanks,
Ming

I'm not certain, but the NOTICE file, that contains the copyright for the entire release is wrong.

This is the policy: http://apache.org/legal/src-headers.html#notice

I don't see any guidance about how strict that dates be correct.

Kylin 2.2.0 , in NOTICE, it is 2014-2016, but Kylin 2.2.0 released at 2017 Nov
ZooKeeper 3.4.8 , NOTICE file said 2009-2015, but ZooKeeper 3.4.8 released at 2016 Feb
Drill 1.12 , NOTICE file said 2013-2014, Drill 1.12 released at 2017 Dec
HBase is very good, update NOTICE for most releases, but the 2.0.0-beta-1 released at 2018 Jan, and the NOTICE file not update the year, still 2007-2017
Kudu 1.2.0, NOTICE file is 2016, but it released at 2017 Jan
Hive 1.2.2 , NOTICE file is 2008-2015, 1.2.2 released at 2017 April
...

Hadoop is very strict at this, not only update year for each release, but also lists all third-party license header in its NOTICE file.

So in sum, I think it will be good for Trafodion to strictly follow the rule in the next release, but it is not strict for now. Could you consider to change your vote ?

Thanks,
Ming

+1, I can live with this temporary inconvenience as all our files have the
correct header and I feel confident that the community will ensure that it
won't be incorrect in the next release.

I was able to build from scratch using instructions verbatim at the section "Create Build Environment" and "Build Source" at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/TRAFODION/Trafodion+Contributor+Guide
I used centos 6.9
[centos@gselva-trafodion-2 conf]$ lsb_release -a

Distributor ID: CentOS
Description: CentOS release 6.9 (Final)
Release: 6.9
Codename: Final

The webpage has two minor issues.

1, git clone git://git.apache.org/trafodion.git
It shows the steps to build from latest source. It didn't show the steps to build from a tag or a given release. "Source Download" link has some outdated incubator-trafodion links

2, Set Default (Debug) Environment
cd <Trafodion source directory>
source ./env.sh

It should show cd <Trafodion source directory>/core/sqf. But, release build shows the correct directory.

Otherwise, I was delighted to see the instructions work like a charm.

I missed seeing the "install_local_hadoop" sections in the next steps, but used my own way to install Hadoop and start trafodion.

But the initialize trafodion failed with the following error

I don't see any guidance about how strict that dates be correct.

I can change my vote to +1 if someone else is able to initialize trafodion with R2.2.1 building from scratch either from source bundle or github.

I'm not certain, but the NOTICE file, that contains the copyright for the entire release is wrong.

This is the policy: http://apache.org/legal/src-headers.html#notice

I don't see any guidance about how strict that dates be correct.

hi, Selva,

One more comment about following issue. In fact, the web page is correct, at the top level dir, env.sh will do same as cd to core/sqf and then source the sqenv.sh. It is default behavior, and will set the build flavor to DEBUG.
cd to core/sqf, there is no env.sh
So I think here the page is correct.

Re: RE: [VOTE] Apache Trafodion release 2.2.0 RC 2

Hi, Selva,

I verified on a fresh CentOS 6.9, and can successfully finish all instructions and build and start Trafodion.
"initialize trafodion" also works fine in my environment.

As for the web page 'issues', here is my comment:
There is a separate page to tell the user how to set up testing env , including the installation of hadoop, by using 'install_local_hadoop' script as well : https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/TRAFODION/Create+Test+Environment
So next time I will add this page in the VOTE message.

For the git command, the page is about how to get the code from git, and it is generic, not good to mention for a specific tag. But I can add some example to show that. And again, I feel it is good to add this in the VOTE message to tell the voter after get the code, how to set the tag.
And I think it should be more officially to test the src tarball from SVN as well. So I will add that in the VOTE message as well.

So , in sum:
CentOS 6.9 is fine
I will update the web page about how to switch to a specific tag/version of trafodion
I will update VOTE message, for voters to know which tag to use, and it will be good to build from the src tarball as well.

Hope this solve your doubts. ^_^

Ming

I was able to build from scratch using instructions verbatim at the section "Create Build Environment" and "Build Source" at https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/TRAFODION/Trafodion+Contributor+Guide
I used centos 6.9
[centos@gselva-trafodion-2 conf]$ lsb_release -a
LSB Version: :base-4.0-amd64:base-4.0-noarch:core-4.0-amd64:core-4.0-noarch:graphics-4.0-amd64:graphics-4.0-noarch:printing-4.0-amd64:printing-4.0-noarch

[centos@gselva-trafodion-2 sqf]$ sqlci

RE: [VOTE] Apache Trafodion release 2.2.0 RC 2

Posted by Steve Varnau <st...@esgyn.com>.
I'm not certain, but the NOTICE file, that contains the copyright for the entire release is wrong.

This is the policy: http://apache.org/legal/src-headers.html#notice

I don't see any guidance about how strict that dates be correct.

RE: [VOTE] Apache Trafodion release 2.2.0 RC 2

Posted by Hans Zeller <ha...@esgyn.com>.
Hi Steve, does this really justify an entire new round? All the code (ok, maybe only 99.98 %) for this release was written in 2017. The fact that we voted in 2018, does that really justify an update to the copyright year?

RE: [VOTE] Apache Trafodion release 2.2.0 RC 2

Posted by Steve Varnau <st...@esgyn.com>.
I checked signatures and checksums for all artifacts.
I ran RAT to check licenses.
I compared the source tarball to the 2.2.0rc2 label in git.
I did a quick review of LICENSE, NOTICE, README, RAT_README, .rat-excludes in source tarball.
I did quick review of LICENSE and NOTICE in each of the binary tarballs.
I verified that there is no longer an incubating DISCLAIMER file in any of the tarballs.

I did not actually build or test the source tarball.

I did not find any issues.

+1 for me.
