win32 subversion hangs when attempting to checkout repository

       ~/hacks $ svn co https://svn2.ecos.de/perl/dbirs/dev dbirs
Error validating server certificate:
 - Unknown certificate issuer

I visited the repository with a web browser and entered my username and 
password and it worked fine so there is no problem with the repository.
