[Issue 125989] Sidebar without group highlighting

UI design is not always just about look.  The active elements in the sidebar
have a visible background to give the user a visual clue which icons are active
an which are only illustrative.  This prevents users from first having to move
the mouse over an icon in order to discover if it is one or the other.
