I see that the basic mavenVersion property has been updated as part of MSITE-758 in 3.8.2 (notice: in such a minor release, changing Maven prerequisite is not really expected...)
but the hard work of cleaning code has not been done
see for example https://github.com/apache/maven-site-plugin/blob/maven-site-plugin-3.8.2/src/main/java/org/apache/maven/plugins/site/render/AbstractSiteRenderingMojo.java#L230
and I'm sure there are other locations to cleanup

perhaps the title of this issue should be updated to something like "cleanup code now that Maven 2 support has been removed"
