According to [1], markdown markup is not supposed to be processed within block html tags.
However, this does not appear to be true, as leading spacing does not seem to be preserved as expected in [2], see [3]
Note that the mdtext file has

See Attachment 2

Yet the 2 appears in column 1 - the leading spaces have been removed.
