Problems with war file - where is the db directory needed?

Hi,

I am (still/always) struggeling with xindice running under TOMCAT on
Windows XP.

I have installed the latest version on the server.

Checking the installation with "debug tool on
http://localhost:5080/Xindice?/db"

Returns:
type Status report
message /Xindice
description The requested resource (/Xindice) is not available.

Problem seems to be that the xindice does not find the db directory. I
tried various directory creation but none worked.

I tried for example creating one in:

C:/Programme/Tomcat4_1/webapps/xindice/Web-inf
And similar other structures.

Next I tried to hardcode the name in system.xml in the web-inf directory
(into a directory where I have it installed too).

This looks like:

<?xml version="1.0"?>

<!--
  - Version: $Revision: 1.8 $ $Date: 2002/11/02 06:23:50 $
  - Author: Kimbro Staken (kstaken@xmldatabases.org)
  -->

<xindice>
   <root-collection dbroot="c:/programme/xindice1.1/db/" name="db">
      <queryengine>
         <resolver autoindex="false"
class="org.apache.xindice.core.query.XPathQueryResolver" />
         <resolver
class="org.apache.xindice.core.xupdate.XUpdateQueryResolver" />
      </queryengine>
   </root-collection>
</xindice>

But this did not help either.

Interestingly enough the work dir (work/standalone/localhost/xindice) of
Tomcat contains another system.xml for Xindice which looks like that
(and I as said I have a db dir for this too!):

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<xindice>
   <root-collection
dbroot="c:\programme\Tomcat4_1\webapps\Xindice\WEB-INF\db\" name="db">
      <queryengine>
         <resolver autoindex="false"
class="org.apache.xindice.core.query.XPathQueryResolver" />
         <resolver
class="org.apache.xindice.core.xupdate.XUpdateQueryResolver" />
      </queryengine>
   </root-collection>
</xindice>

Tomcats log file says for loading Xindice:

Has anyone an idea where I have to create the db directory? Or what is
wrong?

It seems that tomcat is sending this status, not xindice or any other
servlet.

Try http://localhost:5080/xindice or http://localhost:5080/xindice-1.1b.

Hi,

Problems with XP?. Please accept this kind invitation to join Heartsome
Linux User Group. :)

Are you really running Tomcat on port 5080 ?

If in your browser you type http://localhost:8080/Xindice you should see
the "Ugly Database Browser" welcome.

Xindice will automatically create the database under CATALINA_HOME/bin
or from wherever you start Tomcat. If I'm guessing correctly, you are
starting Tomcat as a service, which implies that the db will be created
somewhere out of your control.

Try the following:
        * shutdown Tomcat.
        * change to CATALINA_HOME/bin
        * run startup.bat
        * check if ./db is created in the current directory.

According to the Developers list, there is a pending patch to avoid
automatic creation of the database. This will help a little, as
databases will be created only at your command.

Hope this helps,
Rodolfo

Thanks, Kurt, for your answer, which is very interesting for me as well.
For a correct understanding: isn't there the possibility to access the
database programmatically like the 1.0 version in terms like:

col =
DatabaseManager.getCollection("xmldb:xindice-embed:/localhost:8080//db/
addressbook");

?? (I also tried some variations of the address string but without
success)
Thanks for any suggestions!

I just did (thank you for pointing them out, I hadn't looked well enough
before), but I didn't find any real discussion on the topic. I did see
subjects which very much looked like mine, but no real data or opinions.

Hello all,

Is there a text somewhere that summarizes the differences (or
weak/strong points) between Xindice and eXist? If so, where, if not,
would it be valuable to us to collect the responses and assemble them on
a webpage? I would volunteer to do the collection.

I assume, you also found the error in my script. you should request
$url = 'http://localhost:8080/xindice-1.1b';
NOT
$url = 'http://localhost:8080/Xindice';

i suspect they are case sensitive, since the 'message' value is used to
identify the class name to execute. This is the 'run' method that is
actually executed:

   public static final String MESSAGE_PARAM = "message";

   public Hashtable run(Hashtable message) throws Exception {
      // The method determines what class we load to handle the message.
      RPCMessage handler = null;
      handler = (RPCMessage)
Class.forName("org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages." +
            message.get(MESSAGE_PARAM)).newInstance();

      return handler.execute(message);
   }

so... the 'message' value is appended to
'org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.' . So I believe it is
case-sensitive.  org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.listcollections is
not the same class as org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.ListCollections
I think.

Thanks!

This helped (at least partially). I could get most functions working
again. The only one which are still resisting are Query, CreateIndexer
and RemoveIndexer.

Once I have found out why I will make my updated perl module xindice.pm
available again (which is using the Frontier::Client too).

BTW: Are the names case sensitive?

After getting 1.1 running locally, and splunking through a bunch of
code, I've hit upon a script that invokes the XML-RPC handlers properly
(or at least as far as I can tell). I've attached the script (it uses
Frontier::Client, but you can get it from cpan or ppm). let me know if
this works properly for you.

I don't have the new 1.1 running locally yet, but I think that you just
need to drop the 'db.' prefix from your requests. Here are the relevant
files (i
think):
org/apache/xindice/server/XindiceServlet.java (line 147)
org/apache/xindice/server/rpc/RPCMessageInterface.java
org/apache/xindice/server/rpc/messages/*.java

The XindiceServlet invokes:
	xmlrpc.addHandler("$default", new RPCMessageInterface());
As per docs at http://xml.apache.org/xmlrpc/server.html , the $default
means that no 'handlerName' is required (like it was before with
'db.insertDocument').

So when you request InsertDocument, the XML-RPC server (apparently) will
invoke the RPCMessageInterface.run() method. That will construct a new
org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.InsertDocument object.  Then it
will invoke the execute() method on the newly constructed object.

The last piece is what the actual URL requested should be. I'm not 100%
sure on this... but a little experimentation should show the correct
answer. perhaps /Xindice/<path-to-collection> ? or /Xindice/db ? or
/RPC2/Xindice ? i'm not sure on this point....

The XML-RPC API in CVS (a.k.a 1.1b) has completely different method
signatures for the calls. The CVS tree in general is very different from
the Xindice 1.0 release: CORBA has been dropped, the database itself is
not compatible with 1.0, XMLObjects have been removed (for the time
being), etc. etc.. There really is not much if any documentation for the
CVS version, but we are working on it. You can browse the current CVS
source and obtain the new rpc methods, but they will probably change a
little until we get a new release put together. Hope this helps (a
little).

Hi,

I tried now to use the url: http://localhost:5080/xindice/db for the rpc
calls.

Although this was not successful - in a way :-) - I got the following
response back:

---- request ----
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<methodCall>
<methodName>db.listCollections</methodName>
<params>
<param><value><string>/db</string></value></param>
</params>
</methodCall>
---- response ----
<?xml version="1.0"
encoding="UTF-8"?><methodResponse><fault><value><struct><member><name>fa
ultString</name><value>java.lang.NoSuchMethodException:
db.listCollections</value></member><member><name>faultCode</name><value>
<int>0</int></value></member></struct></value></fault></methodResponse>

This seems to indicate (???) that I "reached Xindice" but the method is
not supported. I am using the names (like db.listCollections) from the
Xindice 1.0 version. Maybe they have changed ???? Question is where can
one find the new names.

Sorry - of course it's not the same problem but a similar one: how are
the URLs and the collection prefixes defined for the CVS version?

RE: Problems with war file - where is the db directory needed?

Posted by Dave Viner <dv...@yahoo-inc.com>.
i suspect they are case sensitive, since the 'message' value is used to
identify the class name to execute. This is the 'run' method that is
actually executed:

   public static final String MESSAGE_PARAM = "message";

   public Hashtable run(Hashtable message) throws Exception {
      // The method determines what class we load to handle the message.
      RPCMessage handler = null;
      handler = (RPCMessage)
Class.forName("org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages." +
            message.get(MESSAGE_PARAM)).newInstance();

      return handler.execute(message);
   }

so... the 'message' value is appended to
'org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.' . So I believe it is
case-sensitive.  org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.listcollections is
not the same class as org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.ListCollections
I think.

This helped (at least partially). I could get most functions working
again. The only one which are still resisting are Query, CreateIndexer
and RemoveIndexer.

Once I have found out why I will make my updated perl module xindice.pm
available again (which is using the Frontier::Client too).

BTW: Are the names case sensitive?

After getting 1.1 running locally, and splunking through a bunch of
code, I've hit upon a script that invokes the XML-RPC handlers properly
(or at least as far as I can tell). I've attached the script (it uses
Frontier::Client, but you can get it from cpan or ppm). let me know if
this works properly for you.

I don't have the new 1.1 running locally yet, but I think that you just
need to drop the 'db.' prefix from your requests. Here are the relevant
files (i
think):
org/apache/xindice/server/XindiceServlet.java (line 147)
org/apache/xindice/server/rpc/RPCMessageInterface.java
org/apache/xindice/server/rpc/messages/*.java

The XindiceServlet invokes:
	xmlrpc.addHandler("$default", new RPCMessageInterface());

I'm not 100%
sure on this... but a little experimentation should show the correct
answer. perhaps /Xindice/<path-to-collection> ? or /Xindice/db ? or
/RPC2/Xindice ? i'm not sure on this point....

hope this helps.

i got the query working. it was generating a null pointer exception
until i added a key 'namespaces' to the $args hash and filling it with
a hash with one dummy namespace. i've added my perl module for
reference, but haven't tested all methods yet.

RE: Problems with war file - where is the db directory needed?

Posted by Dave Viner <dv...@yahoo-inc.com>.
I don't have the new 1.1 running locally yet, but I think that you just need
to drop the 'db.' prefix from your requests. Here are the relevant files (i
think):
org/apache/xindice/server/XindiceServlet.java (line 147)
org/apache/xindice/server/rpc/RPCMessageInterface.java
org/apache/xindice/server/rpc/messages/*.java

The XindiceServlet invokes:
	xmlrpc.addHandler("$default", new RPCMessageInterface());
As per docs at http://xml.apache.org/xmlrpc/server.html , the $default means
that no 'handlerName' is required (like it was before with
'db.insertDocument').

So when you request InsertDocument, the XML-RPC server (apparently) will
invoke the RPCMessageInterface.run() method. That will construct a new
org.apache.xindice.server.rpc.messages.InsertDocument object.  Then it will
invoke the execute() method on the newly constructed object.

The last piece is what the actual URL requested should be. I'm not 100%
sure on this... but a little experimentation should show the correct answer.
perhaps /Xindice/<path-to-collection> ? or /Xindice/db ? or /RPC2/Xindice ?
i'm not sure on this point....

hope this helps.

---- request ----
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<methodCall>
<methodName>db.listCollections</methodName>
<params>
<param><value><string>/db</string></value></param>
</params>
</methodCall>
---- response ----
<?xml version="1.0"
encoding="UTF-8"?><methodResponse><fault><value><struct><member><name>fa
ultString</name><value>java.lang.NoSuchMethodException:
db.listCollections</value></member><member><name>faultCode</name><value>
<int>0</int></value></member></struct></value></fault></methodResponse>

This seems to indicate (???) that I "reached Xindice" but the method is
not supported. I am using the names (like db.listCollections) from the
Xindice 1.0 version. Maybe they have changed ???? Question is where can
one find the new names.

Sorry - of course it's not the same problem but a similar one: how are
the URLs and the collection prefixes defined for the CVS version?

I run into the same problem. All of the following trials to get a
database
connection resulted in error 400:

col = DatabaseManager.getCollection("xmldb:xindice-embed:///db");

col =
DatabaseManager.getCollection("xmldb:xindice-embed://localhost:8090/

col = DatabaseManager.getCollection("xmldb:xindice-embed://141.71.2.3:

Hi,

That's a real good hint !

It works in this way!

Thanks a lot !

Maybe a silly question: If I use now xml-rpc for access, do I have to
use http://localhost:5080/xindice/ now for the URL ? As far as I
rememeber the old version of Xindice was running under 4040.

I succeeded with http://localhost:5080/xindice/Xindice?/db
