Google recently switched off Google Code. They transferred the
Protocol Buffers project to
[GitHub|https://github.com/google/protobuf], and binaries are
available from [Google's developer
page|https://developers.google.com/protocol-buffers/docs/downloads].
However, only the most recent version is available. We use version 2.5
to be compatible with Hadoop. That version isn't available for
download. Hence, our [compile
instructions|https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/REEF/Compiling+REEF]
no longer apply.

I think it might make sense to keep around a repository of third-party
open source native code that we use in Hadoop. Nothing fancy, just a
few .tar.gz files in a git repo that we manage. This would avoid
incidents like this in the future and ensure that we will be able to
build old verisons of Hadoop.

Thanks for the information. I found the old repository of protobuf:
http://protobuf.googlecode.com/svn-history/r482/trunk/
Based on the commit log, I created v2.5.0 tag and created tar.gz file
for the communities:
https://github.com/oza/protobuf/releases/tag/v2.5.0
I know this is a temporal fix, but feel free to use it.
