When performing a copy-on-write merge (I haven't verified yet MoR) Spark will completely ignore any pushdown if the `ON` predicate contains a system function.

Digging deeper the problem resides in the fact that the optimiser `org.apache.spark.sql.catalyst.optimizer.ReplaceStaticInvoke` is not replacing (or is not triggered at all) the static invoke call into a `ApplyFunctionExpression`. I will provide a reproducer as a PR.
