jmeter shell script does not work

The jmeter shell script does not work with GNU bash (the sh on Linux).
I'm using bash 2.05-16 on Mandrake Linux 8.2.

Also, when untarring the jmeter distribution, the *.bat files are tagged
executable, but not the *.sh files.
