Outstanding tasks for release.

G'day,

I was actually off-list when the initial release discussions were occurring.
(I was on a 6 wk bushwalk in Western Australia - 6 wks, never checking my
email!). So I've never really been a part of the plan.

Is there something on the critical path that I can help out with? Please let
me know, and I'll try to spend some time on it next week.

btw, thanks to Peter for his great work as Release Manager. From what I've
experienced in the past, it seems to be a pretty thankless task...

+1, yes I agree, well done Peter. We haven't exactly made it easy for you.

I proposed this some time ago, and was talked down on the basis that any version of this form x.x.[y]x where x is a number and y is one of a,b is a release and anything suffixed by -cvs or a date is not.
FWIW I still favour the odd/even style as pursued by Mozilla.

David,

Nope. 2.1 is considered a stable release.

Speaking of versions. Was a decision reached as to follow the Odd and
zero minor versions are development and even 2 and up are stable
releases? I saw a thread started on several lists, but wasn't sure if
JAMES was going to follow it as well....

Repository_configuration section is missing from docs.

The LDAP RFCs are missing from the rfclist. Here they are.

Re: Outstanding tasks for release.

A couple of comments:

---
Obtain the james.sar file from the James download directory. It can be
found in the bin subdirectory of the distribution directory for the
particular build you are downloading.
---

This is true only for the "latest" build. 2.0 builds do not have this.
The 2.1 build is not there yet (oddly enough).

spoolmanager_configuration.html - 404 not found. Link from
spoolmanager_2_1.html should point to spoolmanager_configuration_2_1.html.

A section on where to find the logs files and which ones say what things
could be useful.

Cheers

I think we're still supporting JDK 1.3, but otherwise you could just use
the code included in java.util.regex. Otherwise we don't have anything
packaged just yet.

Serge,

I already have a GenericRegexMatcher and some subclasses. Will be posting
them as soon as code freeze is lifted. They've been in my private build
since early October. If you look at NESSpamCheck (which I re-wrote as a
subclass of GenericRegexMatcher), you'll see that we include the ORO package
in James.

Hi All,

I am thinking of writing a few matchers which use regular expressions, is
there already a regexp API packed into James somewhere like
Jakarta Regexp?

It should also go into jakarta-site2 news, which I can do when the time comes.

1) Docs are pretty much finished? Hopefully people can take a few minutes
to review it, because I think it may be pretty decent with a couple
remaining parts, and I would really like to be finished.

2) Press release draft is in the CVS (src/xdocs/announcement_2_1.xml). I
expect to leave it on the site as well as send it out. Some places want a
link to a press release. I do have a pretty decent list of places,

3) CVS stuff

4) Do we need to sign the files? Danny, Serge, Charles, do you guys have

A little more and I think we can put this to bed, folks.

RE: Outstanding tasks for release.

Posted by "Peter M. Goldstein" <pe...@yahoo.com>.
Darrell et al,

Here are the remaining tasks for release:

1) Completion of the user documentation - As my recent notice to
james-user stated, there are a couple of omission/inaccuracies in the
documentation. They are repository configuration information, database
configuration, TLS/SSL configuration. In addition to
completing/correcting these sections, the whole shebang should be vetted
by a couple of people who are familiar with James and are not me (as I
wrote most of it).

2) Completion of a press release - We need a press release to go with
the actual version release. I've been toying with this, and have a
partial draft together. Noel is going to take a look at it, and then
we'll post the whole thing for general review and comment.

3) Update of the version string in CVS - I've got this one.
4) Build of the actual distribution - I've got this one.
5) Tagging of the source tree at this point

6) Update of the distribution directories' README.html
7) Deployment of the release to the release distribution directories

8) Distribution of the press release through channels - Noel has
collected the list of channels and the relevant distribution info.

IMO #1 is the big blocker. The rest will probably go fairly quickly
once the documentation is up to snuff. So if people can kick in on #1,
that would be good.

Darrell,

Peter probably has a task list handy (we probably ought to have put one on
the web ste), but one thing that you could do is please review (AND PROOF)
the new documentation at http://jakarta.apache.org/~pgoldstein. I just
found an error in the docs I did for the mailing list setup.
