    Resolution: Fixed

Running ant is actually correct. The script executes ant using the source code for the version that is going to add. Therefore running:

 python dev-tools/scripts/addBackcompatIndexes.py 8.8.0

Runs ant on the source code for 8.8.0 which uses ant. This will be an issue once 9.0 is released but not now.
