branch status?

First, congratulations everybody (especially Brett) on pushing RC2 out 
the door!

Second, I'm wondering what is the status of the HEAD and MAVEN_1_0 branches?
What is going on where, what has been merged where and which one should 
be used by people who wish to use and test  the test & greatest Maven.
